    Chapter One

The old witch, Maeveen pulled her black woolen shawl tighter around her shoulders, as the Christmas wind found its way through the ragged holes in the thin cloth, chilling her to the bone. She looked ahead. A bus had just arrived at the school gate. Some children and their parents were getting off. Squealing with excitement, a few of the children ran towards the main school building.

The witch stopped to stare at the brightly lit school. The windows were decorated with holly leaves and red berries. A Christmas tree stood to one side of the school's double doors.

‘Will Patrick be up to it?’ she thought, as she followed a young man, his wife and three children to the doors.

Maeveen stopped at the entrance to the assembly hall to read the colored poster. Below the words, Christmas Show! were some of the names of those performing that night.

The School Choir, led by Miss Curran,

Form four teacher, Mr. Morgan, who will do his, Wonderful Magic Act.

Arlene Carroll, singer of popular songs,

    The McKinney Sisters, Variety act,

Danny McGaghey, who will play a variety of unusual musical instruments.

Maeveen’s wrinkled face creased into a bright smile as she read the last act on the bill. Patrick McLaughlin, genius with a guitar.

    Genius, she cackled.

Her insane laugh alerted Willie Moran, the old school caretaker. Smiling he pulled open the left hand side door to allow her inside.

Thank ye very much, young man, said Maeveen, as she slipped past him, at the same time looking for an empty seat at the back of the hall.

Willie stared after her. ‘Young man,’ he muttered. ‘It’s been a long time since I’ve been called that.’

Maeveen slid along the seats to the wall and sat down. The assembly hall was pleasantly warm so she slipped her heavy shawl back from her shoulders. As she did, one end of her shawl brushed the face of a young boy sitting beside her. He turned. Maeveen smiled at him then looked at the stage. She was impatient to see Patrick. It was almost eight, four hours to mid-night. They would need to be on their way. She looked around the packed hall.

Patrick’s parents sat near the front.

I hope he’ll not be too nervous, whispered Patrick’s mother.

Ah, he’ll be fine, love. I never thought he’d learn the guitar so quickly, said Mr. McLaughlin, looking around the hall. Smiling, he nodded to Mr. McMasters, the music teacher, who was sitting a few rows behind to his left.

McMasters waved back. His wife turned, Who’s that?

It’s Patrick’s parents, he answered. Wait until they hear the Christmas tunes Patrick has selected to play.

His wife smiled. You’ve taught him well then?

Taught... Patrick? I’ve not taught him anything. He’s a natural, that boy. Mark my words, that boy will be the finest musician in the country someday. He’s naturally gifted, all right.

Just then Mr. Hogan, the head-teacher, walked onto the stage. The audience clapped for several seconds then went silent.

This year, our seventh annual Christmas Show, we have many fine acts for you. I know you are all going to enjoy the packed program of entertainers. Now without further ado let me introduce the first act. The school choir, led by Miss Curran, will sing three Christmas carols. So how about giving them an encouraging clap... When the choir and Miss Curran came walking out onto the stage everyone applauded.

As the girls and boys began to sing, Maeveen thought about all Patrick had gone through shortly after he had received his Gift from the leprechauns. Patrick’s Gift had been music. This meant he could play any musical instrument. Because of his Gift and the magic of his music, Patrick had saved the Land of Argoan, a land of dog-like creatures, from an invasion of monsters that had been trying to squeeze through a huge rift in the mountains from deep in the underworld. Patrick had destroyed them and closed the rift using the magic of his music.

Five minutes later, the boy, whose face had been brushed by the end of Maeveen’s shawl, looked up when he heard the noise coming from her. She was snoring and fast asleep. Smiling he nudged his sister in the ribs. They giggled.

Patrick watched from the side of the stage as Danny McGaghey played the last of his unusual musical instruments. During Danny's act he had made music come from all types of metal and plastic household and kitchen utensils. When Danny came off stage to a loud applause, Patrick patted him on the back saying, Well done, Danny. Then it was his turn. He gripped his guitar as Mr Hogan began the final introduction.

And now we come to the final act of the evening. After, there will be sweets and cakes and tea for everyone in the canteen, and who knows, we might have a visit from a certain bearded gentleman in a red suit. He smiled as the smaller children buzzed with excitement. Now, I’d like to bring on a most talented musician. Patrick McLaughlin will play a selection of Christmas tunes on his guitar. He smiled at Patrick’s parents whose faces were bright red, both with excitement and pride.

Just then Patrick appeared at the side of the stage. As the head-teacher waved him on the whole hall erupted with applause.

    The sound woke Maeveen.

Carrying his guitar, Patrick walked to the center of the stage. Smiling, Mr. Hogan adjusted the microphone, then with his two hands he indicated Patrick and said, Patrick McLaughlin.

Patrick smiled down at his parents, then looked out over the audience. He gave a start when he saw Maeveen. Smiling she waved. What’s she doing here? He thought. Now, as he stroked his plectrum over the strings of his guitar, a faraway look came into his eyes and he began to play Good King Wenceslas in a way it had never been played before, the sweet soft music echoing out over the hall, bringing smiles to everyone’s faces.

Mrs. McMasters glanced at her husband. She was surprised to see tears in his eyes.

When he finished Patrick said, I’d now like to play, Adeste Fidelis, for my mother and father.

Tears ran down his mother’s face as Patrick played the old Christmas favorite.

After two more tunes, with the crowd begging for more, Patrick said, Now I’d like to play and sing my favorite Christmas song, Jingle bell rock. As Patrick’s sweet voice sang out, the audience were soon rocking to the popular Christmas rock song. As he later played the rock solo, his slim fingers dancing in a blur across the frets of his guitar, Patrick’s thoughts were on Maeveen. ‘She told me I wouldn’t see her again.’ He looked again for the old witch. There was no sign of her. ‘It was her,’ he thought. He realized Maeveen hadn’t come to hear him play. As he continued playing, his thoughts drifted to his adventures on Argoan. His excitement grew, as he guessed he might be off on another adventure. The thought had him playing faster and faster. Everyone in the hall swayed with the magical rhythm of his music.

When he finished, the applause was deafening.

Patrick looked again for Maeveen. There was no sign of her

Later, as he walked home with his parents, he thought about Maeveen. It was her, he thought. It was definitely her.

I’m so glad I bought you that guitar, Patrick, said his father interrupting his thoughts. You were absolutely fantastic.

Patrick’s mother smiled at her son and winked. You should hear him play the penny whistle.

Patrick and his mother had decided not to tell Mr. McLaughlin about the leprechauns and his Gift. Patrick’s mother only half-believed Patrick’s story anyway. She didn't think her husband would believe it.

The tapping on his bedroom window shortly after midnight, alerted him. He looked outside and there she was- Maeveen. Her familiar face smiled in at him, the moon shading her wizened features slightly, though her eyes seemed to glow. She beckoned.

    Chapter Two

With his heart pounding with excitement, Patrick dived to the window and opened it.

Where did ye go? he asked. I saw ye at the Show. I looked for ye everywhere.

Never mind that now, Patrick, Maeveen hissed, glancing behind her. We need to hurry. She’s waiting.

    She?

Hurry boy! hissed Maeveen, then turned and disappeared down the path to the gate.

With his heart still pounding, Patrick quickly dressed. Wearing an Oasis T-shirt, blue jeans and runners, he was about to climb out of the window when he remembered. Going to
