Born in London in 1963, Erika Leonard is a British author, better known under the pseudonym E.L. James. She was catapulted to fame by the Fifty Shades trilogy: Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed.
Initially, the author self-published fanfiction (stories written by fans to extend or change a novel, movie or any other media product they enjoy) on the internet, inspired by the Twilight saga (2005-2010) by Stephanie Meyer. Thereafter, her story led to the creation of the Fifty Shades of Grey novel.
The press categorizes the trilogy as ‘mommy porn’ or pornographic literature for ‘housewives’ under fifty. The novel was so successful that in 2012, Time magazine placed Erika Leonard on its annual list of the one hundred most influential people in the world.
