Romain Gary (born Romain Kacew, and also known under the pseudonym Émile Ajar) was a French novelist of Jewish origin, born in Lithuania in 1914. He arrived in France at the age of 14. After earning a degree in law, he served with the Free French Forces until the end of World War II. He then pursued a diplomatic career until 1960. He committed suicide in Paris in 1980.
Romain Gary is the only French writer to have been awarded the Prix Goncourt twice: the first time in 1956 for his novel The Roots of Heaven, published under his own name, and the second time in 1975 for The Life Before Us,
