Herndon Davis, an artist and journalist, dedicated his life to depicting the major landmarks and personalities of Colorado in watercolor, oil, and pen and pencil. Best known for the Face on the Barroom Floor, the portrait of an alluring woman on the floor of the Teller House Hotel barroom in Central City, Colorado, Davis was a prolific artist whose murals, sketches, and portraits can be found all over the state, from the Sage Room of the Oxford Hotel on Seventeenth Street to the Denver Press Club poker room. Despite his numerous contributions, his work was never showcased or exhibited in the traditional manner.
In this biography and first-ever collection featuring most of his life’s work, authors Craig Leavitt and Thomas J. Noel provide a detailed look into Davis’s life and career and include a catalog of almost 200 of his paintings and drawings from Colorado and around the country. They also put his work into the broader context of the time through comparison with such contemporary Colorado artists as Muriel Sibell Wolle, Allen Tupper True, Charles Waldo Love, and Juan Menchaca.
Published to coincide with the Denver Public Library’s 2016 exhibition—the only public display of Davis’s work to date—and bringing deserved attention to this overlooked figure, Herndon Davis: Painting Colorado History, 1901-1962 is an important contribution to Colorado’s cultural history.

Housed in the Western History and Genealogy Department is one of our most prized treasures, the Herndon Davis collection of paintings and drawings. Anyone dealing with notable characters and locations in Colorado can explore Davis’s artwork, which, in some cases, provides the only extant images of certain people and buildings. His many colorful paintings and drawings add impressively to our historic gallery of twentieth-century Colorado as well as to our collection of religious santo images. The Denver Public Library is pleased to be both a collaborator and sponsor on this overdue book on one of our most popular and prolific artists.

Imagining a Book

Circus clowns and elephants and bareback horse riders, glamorous Florodora Girls, horse and dog races, boxers, scenes of the Bowery . . . to my young imagination, the basement walls in the Ritter home were covered and alive with Herndon Davis murals.
Anyone who dreams of creating a book should be sincerely grateful to those who agree to author and sponsor the book. Without their resources, talents, and experience, this book would not be possible. Also, today’s digital technologies bring to the book’s printed pages a vast collection of images for Herndon Davis’s paintings and murals. The Ritter murals are the seed that led to my decision to originate this book. These friends of my parents commissioned Herndon Davis to paint murals of some favorite themes in the basement of their Denver home. When the home was to be razed, I arranged for the murals to be photographed, and a videotape was created. Years later, worrying about the tape in my closet, I mentioned Herndon Davis to Tom Noel and was delighted that he quickly shared my enthusiasm.

Noel, Denver’s beloved historian and author, for sharing my dream for this book about Herndon Davis, a twentieth-century historian with a paint brush. University of Colorado Denver History Fellow and author Craig Leavitt’s thorough research and talented writing make this book a delight. Craig and Tom captioned the many images, explaining their significance. Tom Noel and Mary Somerville, co-directors of the Center for Colorado and the West at the Auraria Library, graciously co-sponsored the book. Tom and Craig’s research led to the treasure trove of Herndon Davis paintings and drawings in the archives of the Denver Public Library, which generously co-sponsored both the book and a related exhibit at the Central Library. I will always remember the magical morning with Tom and Craig as Jim Kroll showed us DPL’s collection of Herndon Davis’s beautiful and detailed paintings of now historic characters, places, and other subjects, from saints to dinosaurs. History Colorado also shared its important collection. So, this book fulfills my dream of a comprehensive biography of Herndon Davis and presents a comprehensive collection of his fascinating images.

"Oh yeah, wasn’t he that guy who painted The Face on the Barroom Floor up in Central City at the Teller House Bar?" Few people realize that Colorado artist Herndon Davis was much more than that. He captured the people and places of the Old West transitioning to modern times. His fascination with the human face is epitomized by that lovely visage on the floor of what is now called the Face Bar. Probably a million people have stared into her big brown eyes.
Herndon painted her in 1936 when the Central City Opera House Association commissioned him to do a series of portraits. The face supposedly belongs to Herndon’s wife, Juanita, who looks a little skeptical about being the model. But her visage has become legendary and even launched a popular one-act play, The Face on the Barroom Floor, which the Central City Opera House Association first produced in 1978 and occasionally repeats to this day.
Miraculously, the face on the saloon floor survives, although much of Davis’s painting is gone. His murals in the Tea Room of the Denver Dry Goods Store are no more, although the building, restored, still stands. Also vanished is A. B. Wade’s Keg Bar on 18th Street, where Davis painted faces of prominent Denver folks on the seats so bar flies could sit on their faces. Vanished as well are the murals once in the Hilltop neighborhood basement of the Ritter home that inspired Diane Wunnicke to make this book happen. Diane at least rescued some photos of the Ritter murals included in this book.
Diane conceived of and financed this project. The bulk of the research and writing fell on the strong shoulders of Craig W. Leavitt, a star fellow at the Center for Colorado and the West at the Auraria Library. Operations there are ably led by Dr. Mary M. Somerville, chief librarian and financial wizard.
At History Colorado, photo archivist Melissa Van Otterloo and staff photographer Jay DiLorenzo aided our attempt to locate and procure reproductions of every Herndon Davis work that could be found. Jay provided considerable time, trouble, and expertise to capture the many endangered photos in the basement of the former Denver home of Davis patron Fred Mazzulla. At the Western History and Genealogy Department of the Denver Public Library, a haven for researchers that is also a great center for local art,
