Analysis
Chapter One
Mitch Albom details The Curriculum
for the last class conducted by his terminally ill professor, Morrie Schwartz. Every Tuesday, Mitch meets with Morrie at his home to discuss The Meaning of Life
, which are lessons based on Morrie’s lifetime experiences. Mitch details in educational jargon the requirements of the class. Oral exams in the form of questions were given each week, along with tasks that involved caring for the bedridden instructor. Topics covered included life lessons on everything from love and work, to life and death. Mitch indicates that the class
ended upon the professor’s funeral, and that his final exam came in the form of a paper on what he learned, which comes in the form of the book.
Mitch then goes on to relay an encounter with the professor upon his 1979 college graduation ceremony. As he introduces his parents to the professor, he describes to the reader how unassuming he was, but that his small frame and uncharacteristically charming face belied deep mirth. After Morrie mentions to Mitch’s parents that the student took every class that he taught, Mitch presents the professor with an initialed briefcase. Morrie, touched by the gesture, embraces Mitch warmly and indicates the desire to continue correspondence. When Mitch eagerly accepts and they refrain from embracing, Mitch sees that Morrie is weeping.
Chapter Two
Mitch details the onset of Morrie’s terminal illness in 1994, claiming that Morrie knew something was wrong when he
