About this ebook
James has been working in development in troubled spots for many years, when he suddenly meets Ioana, a friend of his daughter Rebecca. Ioana is older than his daughter and has a mass of auburn hair and lovely sparkling brown green eyes – at least they were after she met James.
James is a widow but Ioana has never been married after an unhappy relationship with a boyfriend in Canada, and decided she has some catching-up to do, but passion turns into love and then they find many pitfalls and obstacles in their path.
James’ work is in a remote area of a war torn country, and Ioana insists on accompanying him, where their love for one another and their passion which unfolds keeps punctuating the story.
Tissues ready please, as this is another Happy Ever After.

First Encounter
James got back to his flat about seven that evening. He had been travelling all day and was looking forward to a small whiskey, or two, and a bowl of soup.
His meeting in Kandy had been the wrap up conference for the work in the Mahaweli Scheme and had lasted all day, but ended soon enough for him to make the road trip to Colombo.
"The problem with travelling is that you do nothing, but are more tired at the end of the journey than if you had been working all day!" he thought to himself.
He had to climb three flights of stairs, and then his Studio Flat was at the end of a long corridor. As he turned into the corridor he saw two female figures sitting on the floor close to his door, and as he walked towards them he recognized that his daughter Rebecca was one of the two figures.
As he approached they both got to their feet; Hi Dad,
said Rebecca and gave him a hug, this is Ioana,
and James shook hands with Ioana, both mumbling hellos, and neither taking much notice of one another. There were two over packed dust stained rucksacks at their feet.
Rebecca, where is your key?
asked James wondering why they had not opened the door gone into the flat.
Left it here last time, sorry Dad, or I’ve lost it.
James now looked at her companion; Ioana was about thirty five he guessed, about ten years older than his daughter, and was obviously travel stained, but her long auburn hair still managed to shine. He did not notice her eyes then. Both ladies were slim and fit and James guessed that they did a lot of walking and right now were wearing tattered jeans and grubby loose fitting T-shirts.
Where have you just come from, Dad?
asked Rebecca.
Kandy today,
and he opened the door with his key.
Bathroom!
said Rebecca and pushed past both Ioana and her father to get there first.
Where have you two been today?
asked James as he and Ioana waited for the bathroom.
Yesterday we hiked down from Nuwara Eliya, to Galle, and today we hitched a lift up here to Colombo.
James grinned to himself as people often referred to up and down based on the north and south on a map.
Just then Rebecca vacated the bathroom, and Ioana took her place.
Wow Dad, great to see you,
she smiled and took a deep breath and came to kiss her father on his cheek, can we stay here for a couple of nights?
There are only one bed and the floor,
he pointed at the small double bed, and floor space at one side near the window, but enough space for two sleeping bags.
We’ll take the floor,
she insisted, we’ve both got sleeping bags, and it’s not fair to take your bed when you’re working!
What do you want to eat?
asked James, changing the subject.
There’s a new Fish and Chip restaurant in town, we’ve heard,
smiled Rebecca.
James relaxed knowing that his whiskey would have to wait, and he’d have to escort these two ladies, and probably pay for their meal! He smiled to himself – the joys of parenthood!
Your both very welcome to stay here, but don’t forget I’ve only got a small kitchen and a bathroom and this one large studio, so there’s not much privacy!
Just then Ioana came out of the bathroom with a wet face and hands.
Take a towel out of the bathroom cupboard,
James said, and Ioana turned back to the bathroom. With the door open they could see her drying her hands and then hanging the towel on a rail. She came out tossing her auburn hair around her shoulders, and joined Rebecca in the kitchen.
James walked towards the bathroom, taking with him clean clothes he had taken from a cupboard in the kitchen, which he used as a wardrobe. The water heater was groaning with exertion and trying to keep the water reasonably hot.
He showered, and relaxed in the clean hot water, and then realized that he had only the small hand towel that Ioana had used to dry herself. He smiled to himself again, and wondered what had happened to his supply of towels.
He got dressed and opened the bathroom door. Both ladies had now also changed into clean jeans and loose cotton shirts. He looked at his watch, the small hand pointed towards seven.
So, where’s this new fish and chip restaurant?
Rebecca opened the door and they filed out.
We can walk from here,
she volunteered as they filed downstairs.
The restaurant was actually about one kilometer away, and they decided to walk in the cool night equatorial air in Colombo, one of them either side of James.
The restaurant was full and they were offered Take-Away, but they decided to wait for a table, which was not too long. The table they did get was near the windows overlooking the sea, and being just south of Colombo and hemmed in on the other side by the railway line to Galle.
There was only one item on the menu, but customers could ask for one of three varieties of fish, all sea fish, James noted.
James order three cold beers and they sat down to relax.
Tell me about you?
asked James looking at Ioana.
I met Rebecca several days ago when we were in the Elephant Sanctuary at Ella. I was by myself and Rebecca was busy writing notes for her journal. In fact I had managed to get a chalet earlier, and I offered Rebecca the other bed as the other chalets were full, mainly as we met earlier when I dropped my mobile phone.
I’m actually Canadian, but I’ve been travelling for two months, most of the time by myself which I actually prefer to a large group,
she continued.
In Ottawa I worked for a charity which gave me some introductions here in Sri Lanka, but none of them wanted to give me a job. They prefer local staff that are cheaper so I’ll probably have to go back next month, and find another job!
And how’s your job Rebecca?
asked her father.
I managed to send off my article about the elephants, this afternoon,
she smiled, "and then I hoped
