THE GUIDE
Welcome to the 29th edition of this Guide. With the world changing ever faster, even within the close confines of our little oenological universe, 29 might seem an eternity, to be measured more in terms of geological ages than in years. While everything around us has changed out of all recognition, we have tried to abide by our principles, our inspiration, and our working methods, simply fine-tuning them over the years. Italian Wines has remained true to its mission of sharing with the most judicious and passionate wine buffs all the complexity and charm of the Italian wine scene, probably the most intricate and intriguing anywhere in the world. Nowhere else is there such a variety of terroirs, winemaking techniques both modern and traditional, and a native grape heritage of such excellence, all of which are key factors in making our oenological scenario such an incredibly multicoloured and variegated mosaic. As the crow flies, Passito di Pantelleria and Passito di Chambave may be vinified over 1,000 kilometres from each other, using very different techniques and varietals, from two terroirs – Mediterranean and Alpine, respectively – that could scarcely be further apart. That said, if we read them as we should (or should we say breath in deeply from the glass) and recap their histories, we come to realize that they are products of a single civilization, of the same culture, of which we are the heirs and guardians. Despite some obvious differences, their DNAs, if you like, largely overlap. And though they have different accents, they still speak the same language. So this is our mission, to tell the stories of Italian wines and winegrowers large and small in a simple and easy-to-understand style, as they are one of the driving forces of our economy, working with passion to preserve all that is best about our countryside. They are its true custodians, and we are proud and pleased to bring the fruits of their toils to the attention of the rest of the world. And we do all this without any sectarian bias, with great open-mindedness, with no ideological barriers or obstacles: here there are both large-scale and boutique producers, industrial concerns churning out millions of bottles and small-scale winemakers, international brands but also biodynamic wines, orange wines created by macerating skins, others aged in small wood, or else in amphorae as our forefathers did some 2,000 years ago. Here in these pages there is some of the best of everything, carefully selected with intellectual honesty and secular spirit. Among the changes introduced in this edition, as well as an indication of the type of production (conventional, organic or biodynamic), there is also an indication of which wineries follow strict sustainability criteria. This is an area to which we are particularly committed and our faith in sustainability shines through, as can be seen in our role in the new Forum per la Sostenibilità Ambientale del Vino (www.vinosostenibile.org), which has published an online report referred to the sustainability of Italian wine. Now, after interviewing over 1,000 wineries, it is about to publish a second and to do this, we brought together a team of outstanding experts, 60 people united by their skill and passion who, in the space of just a few months, have travelled the length and breadth of Italy, tasting all of the wines reaching the market, no less than 45,000 labels, drafting tasting notes and scores. As happens every year, the best wines selected during the regional selections all headed off to Rome’s Città del Gusto for the final tastings, where almost 1,500 samples were examined by a panel of three curators, plus the delegates from each area, to assign the Tre Bicchieri awards. Of course one of the reasons for the success of the Guide lies in the simplicity of the points system: good wines which we recommend are given Un Bicchiere, whereas Due Bicchieri are for the best expressions of the territory, and a Tre Bicchieri, which has now become an international trademark, goes to great wines and is now universally recognized as a symbol of Italian winemaking excellence. Wines can also be given two red glasses, where they went forward for the final tastings. Both for local panels and during finals, all tastings are rigorously blind. This year, at the end of our work we had awarded prizes to 421 wines, more or less the same number as last time round, though the number of wines we tasted and reviewed was a lot higher this year. We have reached the figure of over 22,000 wines from 2,400 winemakers, a gargantuan task, creating an extremely useful tool both for wine lovers and for wine professionals all over the world. As well as assessing all the wines we reviewed (together with their price range), this Guide also provides in-depth profiles of the winery and its winemaking philosophy, giving the reader a wide variety of useful information, from style notes for the wines to the number of hectares under vine, to the production figures, to information on the type of winegrowing, whether traditional, organic or biodynamic. Each profile is completely rewritten every year, rather than just updated. This explains its huge success on an international scale because as well as the Italian version, for years now been we have publishing translations into English, German, Chinese and Japanese, making this the world’s most popular publication on Italian wines. The reputation grown by Gambero Rosso with years of work also enables us to stage 30 different international events every year, starring the best wines of Italy. These events continue to be a huge boost for our wine exports, and a firm date on the calendars of wine lovers the world over, who throng events and make them a runaway success. At the end of another year of tastings, it is time to draw a few conclusions. In this edition we have seen a few classic terroirs come to the fore, such as Montalcino, with great 2010 vintages, or Chianti Classico with its excellent Gran Selezione wines and much more. King of the Langhe remains the Barolo with over 30 wines earning a prize, the north-east submitted some fine 2014 whites, Veneto reds are on great form, while the general improvement among southern wines and the ever-more dynamic Lambrusco mean there is always plenty to write about, from both large- and small-scale designations. Just like every year, our special prizes say it all. Red of the Year is an outstanding Etna Rosso Vigna Barbagalli 2012 from Pietradolce. Alongside is a venerable
white now once again bathing in glory: the Collio Friulano 2014 from Schiopetto. Sparkler of the Year and the 40th Tre Bicchieri of all time are just reward for decades of effort from Ca’ del Bosco and Maurizio Zanella, who have come up with a very elegant, complex Franciacorta Vintage Collection Dosage Zéro Noir Riserva 2006. The quartet is brought to a close by a sweet mountain wine of refined elegance and great intensity, Valle d’Aosta’s Chambave Moscato Passito Prieuré 2013, from La Crotta di Vegneron. Winery of the Year is Allegrini from Fumane, whose alluring Amarones reach all four corners of the globe. Grower of the Year is Giulio Grasso, head of Ca’ del Baio, the creator of great Barbarescos. Up-and-Coming Winery is a vibrant Bolgheri cellar, the Scienza family’s Guado al Melo. Best Value For Money goes to a Campanian wine, the persuasive Falanghina del Sannio Svelato 2014, from the comparatively new Terre Stregate winery. Last but not least, Sustainable Viticulture Award was deservedly won by the Manincor winery from Alto Adige, which has long made the environment a priority. There are also no less than 80 Tre Bicchieri Verdi awards, for certified organic and biodynamic wineries. And lastly there are 111 award-winning wines available at your local stores for under 15 euros a bottle.

BARONE PIZZINI
TRE BICCHIERI VERDI
The Tre Bicchieri Verdi award is applicable to wines produced with grapes from official organic and biodynamic certified plots. This year we have 80 such wines, accounting for just under 20% of our total listings. An important datum testifying how Italy’s top wineries are now fully committed to the environmental process. There are more complex aspects, however, given that many wineries apply similar criteria but do not request certification, and that sustainability protocols are increasingly common among growers. From this year, we will be indicating those wineries by including the wording Sustainable Winery
in their profiles.

TABLE OF VINTAGES FROM 1990 TO 2014
STARS
Stars are awarded to wineries that have won a Tre Bicchieri at least ten times. There are currently 209 stellar cellars
across the Guide’s 29 editions. These are the elite of Italian oenology, a ranking led for years by Angelo Gaja, who now has 53 awards under his belt. He is followed by Ca’ del Bosco, scoring its fourth star along with the Sparkler of the Years prize. Behind them we find La Spinetta (38), Elio Altare (34). Still at three stars, Allegrini, Castello di Fonterutoli and Valentini. We welcome new entries to the club of stars: Abate Nero, Giulio Accornero e Figli, Ca’ del Baio, Cavalchina, F.lli Cigliuti, Eugenio Collavini, Cantina Produttori di Cortaccia, Elena Fucci, Ettore Germano, Franz Haas e Köfererhof – Günther Kerschbaumer, Mamete Prevostini, Monchiero Carbone, Cantina Nals Margreid.

The Regions
Valle d'Aosta
Valle d’Aosta viticulture offers one of the most fascinating profiles in terms of landscape and native varieties. This year our tasting showed a significant growth among those producers who are not satisfied with just making a good and easily marketable product, but try to express through and through the power of these amazing high-altitude vineyards and native Aosta Valley vines. Best news first: this year Valle d’Aosta took home one of the special prizes, Sweet Wine of the Year, for a stellar 2013 Chambave Moscato Passito: Crotta di Vegneron’s Prieuré. The number of awarded-winning wines has also grown, and there are now six, which is an all-time high for Aosta. The three whites are classics: Costantino Charrère’s 2013 Cuvée Bois, in a textured, elegant performance; Elio Ottin’s delicate, elegant 2014 Petite Arvine; and Marco Martin’s Lo Triolet intense, well-balanced 2014 Pinot Gris. More good news comes from the red wine sector, with some distinguished Fumins, Cornalins, Mayolets and Vuillermins, as well as Nebbiolos from top winegrowers. At the end of the day, the best were judged to be two stunning reds: a 2013 Pinot Noir Semel Pater from Giorgio Anselmet, and a welcome new entry this year, Nicola Rosset’s elegant, spicy, savoury 2013 Syrah. Two international vines, certainly, but in the sunny aspecting of this valley they have found an ideal habitat, allowing them to express their varietal character with finesse and without sacrificing their typical Alpine imprinting. Exceptionally positive signals that allow us to observe the future with great optimism. Young people are coming back to work the valiant mountain vineyards, determined to weave increasingly local products of great appeal, which must be accompanied by the unbelievable legacy of tradition and the wealth of native varieties. No other region of Italy, or in the world for that matter, grows vines at over 1,200 metres in altitude. No other terroir vaunts a tradition dating back thousands of years of mountain viticulture like that of the Aosta Valley. The magic of these old wines, which have truly challenged nature, offsets the only drawback in this lovely story, which is that they are very difficult to get hold of!

Maison Anselmet is a regional icon for viticulture heading towards the future. Giorgio Anselmet’s observant and innovative spirit forged the way for his wines, rooted in tradition and driven by modernization, winning over an increasingly demanding market. The winery operates in an area to the north of the region, in Villeneuve, on the road to Mont Blanc. Always on hand to explain the wines and the philosophy, Giorgio and his father Renato run a modern cellar that makes no secret of its traditional inspiration.
Chardonnay Élevé en Fût de Chêne has always been the flagship here but this year Giorgio took our breath away with his Semel Pater 2013. The elegant, vibrant Pinot Nero, dedicated to his father, has spicy overtones, balance and irresistible well-defined wild strawberries and blackcurrants. The well-typed Fumin 2013 is untamed, harmonious and well-balanced. A Müller Thurgau 2014 is pleasantly fresh, with citrus notes.

Dynamic, resourceful and feisty are the perfect descriptors for Maurizio Fiorano, the driving force behind this pleasing cellar and its wines too. The winery works out of Saint Pierre, a sunny village north of Aosta, where climate and altitude guarantee elegant, quality wines that continue to improve with each passing year.
We really liked the intense ruby Torrette Supérieur 2013, with a fruity nose of cherries and currant, ushering in a well-balanced, leisurely palate. The Petite Arvine 2014 is exceptionally true to type, showing mineral and floral, with hints of broom and white flowers, nuanced with citrus; the flavour is pleasantly balanced, fresh and clean. There are also mineral notes in the elegant, crisp Chardonnay 2014, with a generous nose which is fruit-rich as is the palate. A noteworthy Fumin offers an intense, inky colour and is rich and fruity in the mouth. Finally, the Syrah, with elegant tannins, recalls pepper notes that in no way overpower the fruit.

Since ancient times bottles of Chambave have fuelled the souls of artists, writers and wine lovers. Today there are 120 growers in the cooperative, and their passion and commitment to tradition keep pace with the slow ripening of the grapes under the careful supervision of cellar technicians. A very extensive product range has led to an excellent market ranking and La Crotta’s skill in raisining the grapes is a benchmark throughout the region.
A Tre Bicchieri goes to Moscato Passito Prieuré 2013, one of the best of the year. It has a brilliant golden colour and an astonishing aromatic profile, opening on notes of apricot and peach that usher in floral nuances, followed by thyme, closing on dried fruit. The palate shows concentrated fruit, sweetness and, above all, freshness and elegance. Not to be missed. The Fumin Esprit Follet is typically untamed, with vegetal and fruit notes on the nose, and a rich and balanced structure. The Chambave Supérieur Quatre Vignobles 2013 is interesting, as is the dry version of the Chambave Muscat.

SUSTAINABLE WINERY
Much has been written about Les Crêtes, but when it comes to Costantino Charrère and his family, there is still plenty to be said. The new cellar is now done and dusted although it lacks the finishing touch: the multisensorial
tasting room to engage all five senses, next on Costantino’s wish list, an authentic place of worship for wine aficionados. The new tasks for the near future include creation of a new vineyard but the variety to be planted is still a secret . . .
A Tre Bicchieri goes to Chardonnay Cuvée Bois, a venerable Valle d’Aosta flagship in the wine world, where it holds its own against international competitors. The 2013 has lustrous colour, a nose which speaks of acacia flowers, showing unabashed fruit that ushers in cinnamon and vanilla spice; the tangy mouth is opulent but not oily, rich, fresh and leisurely. Both the floral Petite Arvine and the spicy Fumin are excellent.

Torrette is the region’s typical red from the petit rouge variety, and 11 municipalities are authorized for production. The wine takes its name from the zone and the Di Barrò winery lives in the heart of this terroir. The quality of the wines made by Elvira Rini and Andrea Barmaz has become a constant and a guarantee. The quest to ensure every label has varietal stamping is evident and while the production range is not huge the use of local clones alternated with several international cultivars takes these cellars to prominent market positions.
This year we recommend the Torrette Supérieur Clos de Château Feuillet 2012, with an intriguing nose reminiscent of very ripe fruit and clear hints of cherry. The mouth also shows considerable complexity, with tannins still on the road to maturity. The well-structured Chardonnay is admirable, with an intense straw yellow colour and pleasant citrus notes rounded down by hints of honey. A mention also for the Torrette Supérieur Ostro 2009

Terracing snatched from the mountain in sites almost impossible to access, reached by a monorail, is the birthplace of picotendro. This clone of the nebbiolo native to this area of the lower valley is trained on tall pergolas supported by small stone columns. Only the innate enthusiasm of the cooperative’s vignerons keeps them committed to their work each year, and their offspring continues the work of their parents. Donnas is now a subdesignation of the Valle d’Aosta DOC, but in 1971 was the valley’s first designation of origin.
We liked the ruby red Donnas 2011, with it garnet nuances and hints of dried roses, ripe red berries and pleasantly delicate spicy notes; the palate is complex and leisurely. Napoléon 2012 is fresher, with more vibrant colour and lively hints of fruit on the palate. The Vieilles Vignes 2011 shows less finesse on the nose, with notes of very ripe red berries, salvaged only by the fresh, clean palate.

Visitors heading to the Gran Paradiso Park pass right in front of Lo Triolet, Marco Martin’s lovely Junod winery. So why not stop and enjoy local hospitality, with the excellent wines from the vineyards surrounding the winery? These are uncompromising, extreme wines and the Pinot Grigio is the best of them all.
The Pinot Gris 2014 has a nice intense, bright straw-yellow colour and unleashes a feisty character with aromas of pear, flowers and smoky and pepper notes on the nose; the mouth shows backbone and harmony, with a champion’s acidity and flesh, and a very long finish. This wine is still very young but is already well-orchestrated. The barriqued version acquires a vibrant, intense golden straw colour, and on the nose we find rich, slightly overdone notes of very ripe pears on a bed of spice and softwoods. This wine plays out on nose and palate complexity and intensity.

Cave’s production is centred around fresh, light wines echoing the aromas of the mountain. The priè blanc, still an ungrafted variety, has a very short growing season with late budding and early ripening, at incredible altitudes. When Horasse-Bénédict de Saussure, described the typical low Morgex pergola, which can only be tended by lying under it, he could not have imagined that one day the wine would become a regional flagship.
The Piagne 2014 Blanc de Morgex was a pleasant surprise this year. The brilliant, lively greenish straw-yellow precedes an intense nose with pronounced notes of Granny Smith and mountain flowers, harmonized by rock mineral hints. It is subtle and appealing, with a well-defined mouth showing balanced acidity and flesh, signing off nice and long, with a hint of tartness in the finish. The Morgex 2014 is also interesting and the Metodo Classicos held their own. The sweet Chaudelune, made from later-harvest grapes, was as tempting as usual.
