Now Revealed the Tips on Defending Yourself

How to be Your Own Bodyguard?

The super easy guide book to Defending Yourself

I wanted to include a selection of the actual strikes and physical target zones because I think it's important to balance the practical and theoretical.  I can't stress enough though how important a deep understanding of the principles behind self-defense are BEFORE you ever tackle any physical tactics.

Consider these principles your foundation for self-defense. Without a solid base of understanding, your physical actions will likely be shaky and unpredictable. This can make things even worse given that violence is already a pretty shaky and unpredictable experience anyway!

Ensure you have read and fully understood, on a personal level, the various chapters before believing yourself confident to face situations in the real world. Its one thing to read about adrenaline and stress affecting you, but until you truly experience it, it's common to think "Oh, that won't affect me" or "I'll be OK because I will just do X". The truth is we wouldn't just do anything, and it's likely we would be completely overwhelmed at the time.

I say this not to focus on the doom and gloom of the situation but to stress how important the understanding of how to use your mind and body is before you put any of it into practice.

    Conclusion

    Introduction

Self Defense is just that; defense.

We NEVER use these methods to attack beyond ensuring our own safety.

The laws around the world are different in every country and it would be difficult to detail the specifics for everyone but as a rule of thumb ‘Reasonable Force’ is the way to assess any situation.

Your physical actions to defend yourself should be appropriate to the threat you face and, if you have the chance to escape, you should always take it. Not just because it makes sense but because this is often a legal requirement.

In a court of law, defending one’s person or property against a threat is usually permissible. Sticking around to inflict further damage however is not, and will land you in prison.

Always take a second and consider your actions, take a deep breath. How will what you do be seen by others?

Good: You block an attacker, strike him in the face once and run away.

Bad: You block an attacker, strike him in the face repeatedly and kick him when he is down.

Good: You shake off an aggressor who grabs you, kick them low once and run away.

Bad: You shake off an aggressor who grabs you, kick them low once and run away then come back later with your friends and beat them to within an inch of their life.

Chapter 1: Get the Full Picture

Why You Should Be the Gray Man (or Woman!)

Some of the toughest people in the world are Special Forces soldiers, but incredibly, you’d never know it to look at them. Military operators from the elite units like the SAS (arguably one of the originals), Delta Force, Mossad, or Spetsnaz go through grueling physical, tactical, and mental training regimes to shape them into brutal fighters capable of both armed and unarmed combat to the death. Image from Flicker by Howard

These are the people they send into the most dangerous parts of the world to get the job done when most others would fail. So what do they look like? Muscle-bound superheroes? Shaved-headed tough guys. Camo-clad brawlers?

Actually, they look just like everyone else, and that’s pretty much the point. They need to blend in, disappear, and not draw unnecessary attention to themselves to avoid danger.

I remember my father, who spent many years working in Airport security and counter terrorism, telling me about an individual he knew that had applied for British Special Forces selection. They guy was huge, muscles upon muscles, and looked like the sort who could stare down a Great White Shark.

He never made it past the first interview.

The unlucky fellow was told he stuck out like a sore thumb, had poor fitness (he couldn’t run effectively due to his size), and was completely unsuitable for undercover operations.

Drawing unnecessary attention to yourself is a big no-no in top tier military or intelligence operations, and the same applies to you and I keeping safe on the street.

Sure, you may not be undercover in the back alleys of Mogadishu, but the principle for self-protection is the same. Blending in, not drawing attention to yourself, and dressing appropriately can drastically reduce the odds of you being selected as a target.

Strutting around in your MMA T-shirt and growling at anyone who passes may make you feel tough, but if a guy and his six drunk friends take offense, you are in a difficult situation no matter how strong you are.

Similarly, if ladies go out and want to dress to impress, that is fine. But walking two miles to the club in a mini-dress through the rough part of town will not end well. You stand out to everyone.

An old concept borrowed from the SAS is that of the Grey man (or Gray depending on your side of the Atlantic): Keep a low profile to blend in with the crowd and disappear. This doesn’t mean you can’t wear nice clothing or make an effort; it just means that you should consider how you will be perceived in your surroundings compared to the type of people and area around you.

    Consider:

    Moving in a crowd

This makes it hard to single out an individual.

    Avoid aggressive stances

Stomping around with arms crossed, scowling at everyone will make you stick out.

    Clothing

Does what you wear make any political or religious statements?  Are you in bright colors while those around you aren’t? Could your clothing (or lack of!) be offensive?

If you are able to minimize your visual contrast against your surroundings, whatever they are, you stand a much better chance of avoiding any danger and staying safe on the streets.

    The 3 Second Secret

The choice of 3 Second Self Defense is not just for a snappy book title. In almost any violent encounter with an aggressor most of the damage is done or the incident is resolved within a few seconds. Image from Flicker by Randy

That’s not to say fights don’t last longer – they do, but remember we aren’t talking about a bout wherein two opponents duke it out until one is the winner. We are trying to escape a threat and remove ourselves from danger – something that can, and should be achieved much quicker.

There may be a chase or there may be a scuffle that lasts 10 minutes, maybe more, but the finishing technique, the one that stops the threat and gets you safely away usually happens in three seconds or less.

It’s also worth noting that this doesn’t always mean physical combat. Within Three Seconds a potential aggressor can be turned away or defused through the correct use of body language or verbal cues, without even lifting a finger.

In fact if we consider the implications of situational awareness and making yourself as difficult a target as possible it could be argued that three second self-defense becomes zero second self-defense. The fight was over before it started because you were never there, never chosen as a victim or slipped away unnoticed. Whether you are a 20-year veteran of Martial Arts or a complete beginner looking for tips on staying safe it’s time to re-examine what we know about safety on the streets. So while three seconds may seem a short amount of time it can be the most important few seconds of your life...

Chapter 2: Unlock Your Brain’s Secret Power

Society makes most of us overthink everything on a daily basis and in an aggressive situation this can be life-threatening. It’s time to switch off the over thinker (your attacker obviously has!) and just act. Image from Flicker by Terry

    The 1,2,3 Approach

This holds true because the 1-2-3 approach isn’t some manufactured system. It’s actually what our bodies are programmed to do anyway. In a tight spot this is what we have going on in our brain – whether we realise it or not. But for some reason many people train against this grain and thus confuse natural instinct.

1-2-3 is a combination of fight AND flight.

Boiled down to the simplest components 1-2-3 is essentially; Avoiding the threat, counter attacking the threat, escaping the situation.

That’s it. I said it was simple!

    1.    Avoid the threat.

(A dodge, a block or interception, anything)

    2.    Counter Attacking

(A return strike of any type)

    3.    Escaping

(Remove yourself from the danger. Run!)

Now don’t go trying to memorise the wording of this approach. The whole point is that we don’t need to because it’s already built in. This page is just a reminder to let your body act how it should.

By focusing on 1, 2, and 3; Avoid, Counter and Run, we remove any unnecessary thought from the process and enhance our built in ability to defend ourselves. Image from Flicker by Vanessa
