About this ebook

I didn’t know the first thing about hunting turkeys on my first day in the woods, but I did have a good friend to get me started. Just a couple of days with him and I had enough info to strike out on my own. This book will empower any turkey hunter just like my mentor did years ago. Both novice and experienced hunters will benefit from this powerful book.

Hunting Wild Turkeys - Will Hunt

    Chapter 1

    My Start

When I was eight years old I lived near the Mississippi River and had a considerable walk to catch the school bus. It was a beautiful walk on a wooded dirt road and I always enjoyed the journey. Even at that age, I loved the outdoors. Shortly before Thanksgiving, I was making my way to the bus stop and four wild turkeys ran across the road in front of me and took flight. Despite the fact that they were running, and not in the stereotypical strutting posture that most kids are used to seeing on Thanksgiving dinner tables, I knew exactly what they were and I was more excited than if I had just stepped off the Teacup ride at Disneyland. Later in life, I remembered this event as I tried to understand my love of the outdoors and hunting. Why? Because I knew that my reaction was not that of a typical eight year old. I knew that my reaction was indicative of a passion that I believe is God given. I love the outdoors and I particularly love wild turkey hunting.

The kind of passion I am talking about will motivate and sustain a person that wants to get started in any endeavor. It made me hungry for knowledge. I wanted to become proficient as quickly as possible. That is what motivated me to compress time frames by applying myself. I was glad to go the extra mile and because of that I got up to speed pretty quickly. I also had the advantage of a good friend who got me started. He knew what he was doing and was happy to share his expertise. I got my first bird while hunting with him, but that was not the most significant thing I acquired while shadowing him in the turkey woods. I left that hunting trip with enough info to get me started. I was a newbie, but he had empowered me so that I could go it on my own. As they say I knew just enough to be dangerous, but I was excited and motivated!

I read an article early in my turkey hunting journey that stated that most hunters will not know what they are doing until they have been involved in about fifty turkey deaths. I had only been hunting for about two years at the time and I was tempted to be discouraged. Now that I am on the north side of that number I gotta say I completely understand. The article did not say that a novice turkey hunter could not have fun while he was gaining experience that would become wisdom. I had a blast as a greenhorn turkey hunter. I enjoyed it so much because I knew enough to give myself a chance for success. The little successes I had kept me wanting to go, being out there gave me experience, and the experience gave me wisdom that made me a better turkey hunter. Success bred success!

I get excited when another hunter honors me with the opportunity to help them learn how to hunt turkeys. I have two sons and when they came along I spent most of my turkey hunting time with them. Before they were in the picture, I had a streak where I helped twelve different hunters get their first turkey. I was not guiding at the time I just wanted to help. I did do a little guiding one spring and in my pre-hunt interview I always tried to make it clear that I could not guarantee them a bird. However, I could guarantee that I would teach them how to hunt turkeys. I had full control over the info I passed on and I wanted to empower them so that they could be self-sufficient. Many of those hunters contacted me later to share their successes. They were grateful for what I had taught them. I loved hearing their stories and knowing I had a small part in them.

My goal from here forward is to share the information that I shared with them. Thank you for allowing me to help. Let’s get started!

    Chapter 2

Tell Me about the Place You Hunt

The first question I ask when people want my help is what is available to them in the way of hunting land. Are they in a hunt
