About this ebook

Lizard of Oz is made up of two separate anthologies: Greenhorns & Bundaberg. While not exactly a travel journal, the seventy-plus songs and poems gathered here do capture the moods and times the author went through as he packed his bags and set off on an adventure into the unknown!
As in the Australian continent itself, there is huge diversity in Lizard, from the ludicrous (Maud, Fighting With Giants), to the more thoughtful (Dingo, Keep on Dancing), and the alternative lyrics to several well-loved songs (Bundaberg City, Tribute to John Lennon).
They would have you believe there are no icebergs Down Under, but seen through the author’s eyes, you will realize that Lizard is merely the tip of one...

    Introduction

In January 2004 when I headed off to Australia I had for the first and only time in my Life a plan. I’d got a contact to find work and I’d hoped to get sponsored and move out there permanently. However, having arrived I quickly knocked that idea on the head and decided I just wanted to see as much of the place as I could. I still thought of finding a sponsor, but... later.

So I worked a bit and travelled a lot, and on the way I began write quite prolifically. In this collection are the first two of my Australian anthologies, Greenhorns & Bundaberg which make up about the first three months of what turned out to be, sadly, only one year Down Under.

    GREENHORNS

    Introduction

As the name implies, although my Life has been one of almost constant travel from the age of six, this was my first time backpacking and I made all the usual mistakes – thinking my money would go further than it did for one and also stuffing my bag far too full! Everyone does it – you’re going to be away for a long time, yes, but you somehow forget that wherever you go in the world, there are shops there too...

I went with a friend and his girlfriend and because it had been arranged about four months before, by the time we finally left it was with a sense of optimism and excitement – I for one was almost bursting!

This sense of adventure & enthusiasm comes through in all the poems in Greenhorns, from the first three written in Osaka airport en route, to the last just before we flipped a coin to see where we would go to work, our money almost gone.
