Umberto Maglioli teamed with mentor Giovannu Bracco for a second place finish in the 1951 Targa Florio. This performance gained for Umberto his first notice in the world of racing. Maglioli/Bracco drove a stock Lancia Aurelia. After winning the 1953 Targa Florio, once more in a Lancia, he was recruited by Scuderia Ferrari. Soon after Maglioli won the coveted 1000 Kilometers of Buenos Aires in a Ferrari 375.
Author Michael Cannell once described Umberto Maglioli as a 25-year-old Italian with soft, handsome features. Umberto once painted the name of Quintus Fabius Maximus, a Roman general who wore down his enemies, on the upper area of his windshield.
He won the last Carrera Panamericana in a Ferrari 375 Plus Spider Pinin Farina s/n 0392AM. After this triumph Maglioli was revered by Ferrarists because this race was considered the most challenging
among those that comprised the World Championship.
