About this ebook

This is Part 3 of a 3-Part serial novel. All 3 are currently available.

The global infection turned over our world to the undead - slow zee’s - or so the survivors thought. As a new strain of zombie takes hold, one that can think, communicate, and move with inhuman speed, most surviving lifers just want to get through the winter. An insurgency of the living is desperately needed.

Learning they can no longer count on concealment and evasion, Toey and her friends take the fight to those that would enslave them.

Infection Day is the 2nd book in the Z Inferno series.

I'm a Canadian living in beautiful Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. I'm a fan of SF, Horror, Fantasy, Historical fiction, DVD serials, and Asian transcendental writing. To date I've written eBooks in SF, Horror, and Writing Methodology. I'm fascinated by this morphing world of ePublishing. Imagine integrating multimedia in an eBook, i.e. period folk ballads as chapter breaks for a Historical novel. Music and visuals done right would enhance and deepen a reading. Ten years ago no one thought e-readers would ever be popular, and look at them now. We have the same resistance today to other emerging innovations. It's an excellent time to be active in this industry!

Toey nodded to Luc as they came to a slow stop, the engines still idling. They were about five hours out, half-way across the Strait of Malacca en route to the port of Lhokoseumawe in Sumatra.

Natt set adrift a 10-liter plastic water bottle. She then took the hood off the Singapore-made CIS heavy machine gun, tilted it into position, and fired off several bursts of the 12.7 x 99 mm. rounds. The third and last burst obliterated the bottle in a cloud of exploding Styrofoam.

Satisfied? Luc asked with a smile.

    It’ll do, Natt replied.

Luc and Toey sat at the pilot bridge’s two stations, Luc at the navigation wheel. Fai and Natt sat behind on a fold-down bulkhead bench. He re-engaged the Marsun’s powerful engines. The assault boat’s performance was nothing like their multihull sailboat, Peni – the roll and pitch of this monohull was jarring at first. Nor was it as comfortable or spacious, but it was definitely more secure. Below and aft of the bridge was a compact galley and canteen. Forward on the main deck were the AT4 and CIS platforms, and on the deck below were fold-down bunks and more seating.

Tell us about the Littoral ship, Luc, Fai asked.

He turned around. What do you want to know?

It’s basically a coastal patrol boat, isn’t it? Fai asked.

Yeah, and very fast, he replied, as he gently accelerated the Marsun.

    "Like Peni."

Yeah, but to be honest, it’s sort of a white elephant. There was a lot of controversy around the Littoral multihulls.

    How so?

They sacrificed many of the capabilities a naval fighting ship should have for a multihull’s speed.

    Fai glanced over, surprised.

That’s why I wanted to see it, he said, riding the Marsun along a wave’s crest for two beats before sliding down the other side.

Fai turned to Toey. Bez mentioned the Authority might keep a refinery going, for the fuel. We should try doing the same.

Toey shrugged. It’s possible, for them and us. But whoever tries will need electricity, and lots of it. And frankly, we’ll be losing that any day now.

Natt nodded. Most industrial capacity will start going offline soon. If the Authority has plans to keep stuff going they’ll need a whole sector’s infrastructure.

It’ll likely take years to achieve that, Toey agreed. In the meantime things will shut down.

    "So
