Dear Reader,
When I was ten years old, I read a book called Eight Tales of Terror.
This book was written by Edgar Allan Poe, a famous author who created frightening and mysterious stories.
My house was empty when I got home. I sat down to read the book in a high-backed chair in the living room. It was the middle of a spring afternoon, with cheerful sunlight streaming through the windows.
As I turned each page, I kept looking up, glancing behind me, listening for unusual sounds.
I WAS TERRIFIED.
That night I read all eight of the stories again.
Now it is your turn to read. Seven tales of terror await you.
BE BRAVE.
Oliver stood on the dark lawn while laughter and movement and flashing cell phones whirled around him. Throngs of kids were walking up and down the sidewalks, crossing the streets, laughing and talking cheerfully. They lifted their masks to talk to each other. They bent their heads to check out the goodies in each other’s trick-or-treat bags. A few of the more eager kids sucked on lollipops or chewed on chocolate bars.
Oliver stood quietly, without moving a muscle. He was staring at something, or rather someone, at the end of the street.
A kid in a fat bumblebee costume ran up to him. Ollie! Look at the score from the Hansons’ house! They give you three different candy bars!
Normally this kind of news would make Oliver’s eyes pop and his saliva glands go into overdrive. But Oliver didn’t move. He held up a finger to silence his friend. Joseph,
he said quietly. Take a look down the street.
Joseph looked. Then he shrugged. So? It’s just some kid.
But who is he?
said Oliver.
Some big teenager who wants candy,
said Joseph. That must be why he’s only wearing a mask. He’s too cool.
