Mary Hertz Scarbrough has written more than two dozen fiction and nonfiction books for young readers. Her first book for Capstone Press, Heroes of the American Revolution, was a Junior Library Guild Selection. She practiced law for 10 years and has taught writing and constitutional law. She loves to unearth little-known facts and particularly enjoys researching and writing about history and other social studies topics. She lives in Brookings, South Dakota.

CHAPTER 1
Unrest in the Colonies
The American Revolution (1775–1783) was a war of rebellion. Before the war, Great Britain controlled the 13 colonies. The colonists fought this control. Some people fought with weapons, while others fought with words. Heroes stepped forward. Colonists wrote or spoke out against British rule in public. They organized protests against Great Britain. They put their lives on the line serving in the Continental army.
The war started over debt and who should pay it. The recent French and Indian War (1754–1763)
