Fiona brushed a few stray hairs away from her face, careful to use the side of her hand. Her hands were covered in filth—dust mixed with cobwebs and who knew what else. She should have worn gloves. But who would have thought her painfully tidy Aunt Letty would let any part of her home, even her attic, fall into such a state? Maybe she’d been struggling with poor health and Fiona simply hadn’t realized? A familiar tightness blossomed in her chest.

Fiona focused all of her attention on her task. On this moment. The past was then, and she was concerned with now. The tight knot loosened.

Fiona shifted her weight back onto her heels. Her knees ached from kneeling, so it was probably time to give up on the chest she’d been digging through and move on to the last corner. She made a face at the stack of dusty boxes waiting for her. As she stood up, her gaze was drawn to a large picture frame draped with an old sheet resting behind the stacked boxes. She hadn’t noticed it before.

As she passed by the opening to the attic, she called down the steps, Just a few more minutes.

Her roommate Libby hollered, Hurry it up. Her voice got closer, and eventually her head poked up through the attic opening. I still need to put the final touches on my costume for the Halloween party tonight. She scrunched up her nose. And it’ll take me forever to remove all this grime and touch up my manicure. I am not going to a party with chipped nails.

Ten minutes, Fiona said. When Libby sighed and nodded, Fiona couldn’t hide her grin. You really are the best. How about I treat you to a quick touch-up at your favorite nail place?
