    Introduction

I wasn’t walking this earth three millennia ago, at least not in a conscious embodiment of my soul. (Though, I am open to discovering that through deep introspective work). As I am not capable of realizing that just yet, instead I would love to talk with the Karmapa, who is a conscious emanation of the embodiment of a Buddha, and ask him exactly what Sakyamuni Buddha, (also known as Siddhartha Guatama) was thinking. And this is because there is a question that I have wanted to ask him about his reflective reasoning.

Those are questions that I have asked myself lately, and because I consider myself a Buddhist, there are times I question my faith. And in those moments, I have to ask myself, did I become a Buddhist in order to not believe in god?

I was initially raised in a Scottish Presbyterian household in the sixties. And with some Catholic oversight, I was in reaction to god. The god that I was exposed to was a vindictive god. So I shied away instinctively from that paradigm, and gravitated towards anything else.

In high school, I took a course in eastern religions. While engrossed in eastern religions, I immediately gravitated to Taoism and Buddhism, as they were non-theistic in nature. And I realize now that I was open to these philosophies because it gave me pause to invent a different relationship with a concept of creation.

At the time, this felt natural to me, so I didn’t question it. And when I felt cloistered by the current religious paradigms, I would shy away, and find my own niche.
