    This is a steamy historical romance short story (word count 5,833).

    Lady Charlotte Clifford has always held a soft spot for her childhood friend Luke.

    However she believes that any feelings on her side towards him are pointless for Luke does not seem to share her romantic admiration in return. And not to mention a secondary problem for her of her meddling older brothers who seem determined to control every aspect of her life and keep Luke and her apart!

    Soon it seems that things are starting to go from bad to worse when Luke declares his intention to travel across the world administrating his medical talents to those most in need of them.

    Charlotte does not want Luke to go and leave her, but neither does she dare to reveal to him her true feelings without knowing how they would be met?

    But she does wonder as she looks into his intense blue eyes, knowing that for one of the first times since she has known him she cannot quite read Luke’s thoughts!

      ‘Charlotte it’s getting late, let me walk you home,’ Luke spoke with concern.

      ‘Please Luke don’t make a fuss, I am more than able to make my way home, it’s not a long walk as you very well aware, and I know that you prefer to be close to your patients,’ Charlotte spoke with a stubbornness as she observed her childhood friend bandaging up the leg of an elderly man who appeared half asleep.

      ‘I am not so sure that your brothers would agree, the last thing I want is to provoke their wrath, especially Michael he has already given me a stern warning about allowing you to linger here all day at this shelter.’

      ‘He had no right to say anything to you.’

      ‘Charlotte he is your brother and is only acting out of concern for you, that’s perfectly understandable. In any case, it is getting dark now and it will put my mind at rest to see you safely home.’

      ‘Fine Luke if you insist, then you can walk me home,’ Charlotte conceded with a smile.

      ‘Good, give me a few moments. Thomas, I have finished cleaning and dressing your wound, make sure you take it easy over the next few weeks.’

      ‘Thank you, Doctor, how much do I owe you?’

      ‘Please keep your coin; I did not treat you expecting any payment.’

      ‘Are you sure Doctor, surely there is something I can give you for your help?’ Thomas appeared surprised.

      ‘If you want to do something for me, then take lots of rest as I said earlier....oh and reduce your alcohol
