Bokashi Composting
From a reader: Bokashi Composting is a new technique that I was introduced to from a friend so I wanted to do some reading up on it to learn more about it. Mike O’Halloron writes in an easy to understand and clear manner. I learned a lot about Bokashi composting throughout this book and I found the book to be a great guidebook. The book went through the differences in Bokashi composting, the history of this technique, and even does a step by step breakdown of how to make my own Bokashi set up. I really liked how the author goes into detail in the Do It Yourself section. I was able to just buy things from his list and set it up within a short span of time.
The Bokashi method itself works wonders for me. I am able to compost inside my house, and I don’t have to worry about what not to put into my composting set up. It makes things very pain free and easy, so I’m able to compost away with any stress. I think if you’re new to the Bokashi method, or you want to change up your composting to include more items, this book is for you.
Kitchen scraps to Black Gold in a few short weeks
Bokashi is a Japanese term for "fermented organic matter" that is a safe, quick, hassle free and convenient way to compost in your very own domicile. It does not matter if you live in an apartment, house, boat or even a tent. If you generate kitchen scraps and have room for a small bucket, you now have the ability to compost all kitchen scraps (including meats, dairy, fat and fish) quickly and efficiently right in your own home. This is accomplished in a sealed environment, which eliminates the rank odor of rotting materials and without those pesky bugs or flies.
The bokashi system uses a special selection of microorganisms that anaerobic ally ferment the food scraps. This fermentation process is very fast and the finished pickled product is generally ready in two weeks to be applied to whatever use you may want. You can put it in your existing compost pile, feed it to your worms in your worm bin, make supercharged potting soil or bury it in your garden. It is up to you.
The bokashi method was first introduced about 40 years ago. It has experienced a rapid acceptance and expansion worldwide. Unfortunately, it still relatively unknown in the US, but that is quickly changing.
In this volume, you will be introduced to the method of
Bokashi composting, including the how to, where to and when to and results of the system. For example:
You will discover the history behind this accidentally discovered, amazing yet simple system. You will learn how to quickly and easily get started with the bokashi system. You will learn how to save money by making your own tools and supplies from locally available sources. You will discover the many uses of the various products you can create with what you will learn in this book. You will learn to make lactobacillus and the many uses for it.Remember, your soil is a living thing, and when properly fed, can produce amazing results.
Now is your chance to get started on saving money and increasing the size and quality of your organic harvests.
This essential guide is a must-have read and reference for anyone who wishes to turn formerly un-useable waste products into black gold for gardens, composting systems, vermicomposters, container growers and anyone that wishes to help keep waste out of our landfills.

A Word about Bokashi Composting
The arrival of the 21st Century brought with it an increasing awareness of food growth and the need for more complete recycling. It was painfully obvious that we needed to discover, or in this case rediscover, better ways of recycling waste.
The quest for better ways of reducing our accumulation of waste has been very successful on the municipal levels and the next step is on our personal level. In this book Michael demonstrates the Bokashi composting option. He shows us his already working in home system and directs us in clear, easy to understand instructions and illustrations how we too, with just a few basic tools and a couple of dollars, can reduce our foot print on our Mother Earth and gain a valuable resource at the same time.
Fear not, if you prefer not to build your own, Michael shows you photos of the many different types available on the commercial market.
If you wish to discover just how simple and useful this system is, Michael’s book is the manual for you.—Jerry Redford, Redford Disposal and an organic farmer.
Introduction
Why Do I Want To Compost In The First Place?
Composting is the controlled breakdown of organic waste. This may consist of leaves, plant stalks, lawn clipping, food scraps, and manures of herbivores. As long as it was once living it can be turned from waste to value.
Below are just a few of the reasons why so many gardeners, horticulturists and enthusiastic plant lovers are taking advantage of organic composting at home.
Ideal for growing organic herbs, vegetables and flowering plants and foliage.
Saves money on fertilizer and other gardening products purchased from your garden center.
A good alternative to chemical fertilizers for parents, pet-owners and others concerned with safety and health.
Conserves dwindling landfill space.
Easy, convenient way to dispose of garden refuse (often prohibited from landfills).
Helps ward off pests and weeds without chemical pesticides or herbicides.
Improves plant growth and quality by supplying nutrients when needed-as needed.
Reduces erosion and nutrient run-off of garden soil.
Restores nutrients back into the soil.
Helps loosen soil and can be used as mulch.
Breaks down clay based soils.
While most people who are presently composting, or considering composting, have images of bins made of wire, wood or plastic in their backyards, they generally have not considered composting inside the home. The idea of flying pests and the odor of rotting organic material wafting through the home pretty much throws cold water on the thought.
That has changed with the introduction of Bokashi. Although bokashi is used in a variety of applications from agricultural to commercial levels, I will limit my discussion to the in home application of the system. This means that all kitchen scraps (including fish, meat, fats and dairy) are now able to be composted within the confines of your home-quickly and without concerns about insect or rodent infestation nor the odors of rotting materials.
Although bokashi is a complete composting system, it is not meant to eliminate all other forms of composting. Each individual system has its benefits and draw backs and most organic gardens will apply several forms of composting. However, bokashi now gives the ability to the apartment and small home dweller, with little or no garden space, to compost successfully.
In this volume, you will be introduced to the method of Bokashi composting, including the how to, where to, when to and the final results of the system. Bokashi composting is another way to help protect our
