Introduction
I still remember like it was yesterday the moment that Jumper entered our lives.
It was shortly before bedtime on a cold January night when I was just seven years old. My dad, fixated on the television per his nightly evening news ritual, was summoned by my mother to the basement where a strange noise seemed to emanate – a clawing, scratching sort of clamor.
Grumbling about the interruption but obeying his wife like a trooper, Dad ventured into the basement to see what was causing the noise Mom had heard (but no one else had). Insisting that it was just the cold wind blowing and rattling the shutters and our still-displayed holiday decorations, Dad didn’t appear concerned that he would actually find anything. Even my overactive childhood imagination didn’t entertain the prospect of a monster or ghost in the basement.
But fewer than three minutes would pass before Dad shouted from the basement: Throw me a blanket!
It sounded urgent. And the speed at which Mom ran to the dryer to grab a fresh blanket only heightened my anticipation.
What was wrong, I wondered? I heard Dad fiddling with the basement window and it was snowing at this point. So I assumed he suffered a quick chill and needed a warm-up. But to my utter astonishment, moments after getting a blanket tossed down into the darkened abyss of the stairs leading into the basement, Dad began a slow trek up the stairs with something in his arms nestled tight in that freshly cleaned wool
