About this ebook

Six Friends, Minus One Tragic Death, Equals A Senior Year Crissana High Will Never Forget.

Admiration always comes with a price. For THE SIX: Emmitt, Ellie, Hannah, Connor, Kristen, and Tristin, popularity in small town Crissana, Arizona came easy. The inseparable friends have been the envy of their classmates since third grade, and are expected to rule senior year as well. That is until Emmitt’s car is pushed over a cliff, with his twin sister, Ellie, asleep inside.

Now Ellie’s death is all anyone can talk about, while the remaining five begin senior year under an even brighter spotlight. Emmitt hasn’t been seen since the funeral. All eyes are on Kristen as she assumes the role of student body president. Connor has his hands full with an imploding relationship, while Tristin is questioning her sexuality, for the second time. At the center of it all is Hannah, whose boyfriend caused the accident. Everyone’s questioning why she continues to stand by him, especially her friends, and it’s Dax’s job, as Crissana’s anonymous Sun Vlogger, to find the answer.

Grievance explores tragedy, heartbreak, and the unexpected obstacles which can lead you to question who you are or hope to be. The story follows six young characters as they deal with mature situations, including domestic abuse, sexual identity, promiscuity, mental health, and religious beliefs in today’s high school setting. Grievance is a story of hope, honesty, and the power of true friendship—ones you know will last a lifetime.

    Chapter One

    Connor

Connor felt as if he’d been staring at Hannah’s fingers for days, willing them to twitch or move to restore his hope. The doctors assured her mom that Hannah would wake soon. The nurses helped him make up a cot for Hannah’s mom to nap on in the corner of the small room. Connor promised to wake her as soon as Hannah came too.

Now he just waited, staring at her fingers visible from the cast. He still couldn’t believe this was happening. Hannah had over eighty percent of her body in casts and bandages, including the left side of her head, which he’d learned had been shaved for them to repair a skull fracture. There were so many emotions running through him as he allowed his eyes to travel from her hand to her battered face. He didn’t know whether to cry or punch someone. He tried to pray his anger away, but it was too big to overcome, especially with Sean lurking just outside the door.

Connor wanted Hannah’s mom to send him away, but she was unsure if Hannah would want to see him when she woke up and said it would be Hannah’s choice if he got to stay. Connor hated having to relay that message to him. The ride back up to ICU took all the restraint he had left not to smash Sean’s head between the doors.

His phone buzzed. Noelle had been calling all morning, but Connor wasn’t ready to talk to anyone yet, not until he looked Hannah in the eyes so he could know that she was really okay.

He was relieved to see it was a text from Emmitt.

    I knew you wouldn’t

    answer if I called.

    I just wanted to

    let you know that

    I’m leaving tonight.

    What? No, can’t

    you wait a day

    or two?

    I can’t put it

    off any longer.

    Hannah’s accident

    made me realize

    that I need to get

    better so you all

    don’t end up in

    a waiting room

    praying for me.

    I understand. I’ll

    try to stop by

    sometime today.

    No, you need to

    stay with Hannah.

    The only reason

    I’m going is because

    I know you’ll be

    there. I’m sorry

    that I can’t be.

    You’ll be better

    before you know it.

    Gotta go. My mom’s

    coming. I’ll text

    you later.

First Hannah, now Emmitt. Connor never imagined both his best friends could be so messed up. They both needed him today and he had to find a way. He had even more motivation for Hannah to wake up now. He reached out to hold her fingers, but paused when he spotted Sean peeking in the doorway. Connor drew back a fist and lowered his head to pray again. Seeing Sean’s face enraged him. God, please give me the strength to not move from this chair, Connor thought. When he looked up he was relieved to see that Sean was gone. He turned his attention back to Hannah, reminding himself that he was there for her and there was no way he could do that if he got himself kicked out of the hospital or worse, arrested.

Connor heard the click of heels approaching and met Kristen at the door with a finger to his lips.

Her mom’s taking a nap, he whispered.

Okay. Kristen quietly entered and tucked the bags out of the way. Connor placed a chair for her beside his and sat back down before he thought about stepping out into
