INTRODUCTION
Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.
Henry David Thoreau
Your curiosity about the sport of snowboarding is your first step towards your snowboarding career. You have come this far and you are well on your way to something that is likely to change your life. It is likely that you may have already done Youtube searches on snowboarding; you may have mastered some snowboard video games. You envision yourself on the board; you can see yourself doing tricks in the terrain park yet you haven’t made your first snowboard turn.
We all have to start somewhere; congratulations for making the first step. The poster on my wall at work states The Journey Of A Thousand Miles Begins With A Single Step
(Lao-tzu). I remind myself of that phrase in everything that I attempt to do while my inner voice screams otherwise at me. You are too old; you’re gonna hurt yourself; you are going to make a fool out of yourself; why don’t you act your age?
Then, I suddenly remember that I am 61 and I certainly don’t want to act my age. I have been told that snowboarding is the most fun you can have with your clothes on. I will leave it up to you to decide.
The fact of the matter is that snowboarding saved me. It saved me from my blessed yet somewhat hum drum life. It saved me from sending my kids off to snowboard with others instead of with mom. It saved me from becoming a couch potato once the kids left home. It saved me from thinking that mid-life is a time to slow down as opposed to a time to try new things. It gave me a much greater appreciation for the season (winter) that many of us dread. It helped me to realize more of a potential than I ever thought I would have.
You may be wondering if you are crazy to even think about snowboarding at this age. Ask yourself this what do I really have to lose by trying to snowboard?
You are likely to discover something, perhaps even at this stage of your life, that brings you great satisfaction. It may also bring out a side of you that you never knew existed. You certainly don’t have to be a super athlete to give it a try. You may end up with a few bumps and bruises but that might be far better than watching your years fly by as you keep telling yourself you are getting older.
You may be envisioning packs of young, disrespectful teens monopolizing the trails, the lodge and the towns surrounding the ski/snowboard towns. A lot has changed in the sport and culture of snowboarding since the eighties. If you are curious, take a drive to the slopes. Grab a coffee, sit on the deck and watch the show begin. You are likely to see a wide variety of folks carrying snowboards. You may even run into a grandma or pa with a board. They might have found that snowboarding is easier on their knees than skiing. Your vision of restless kids may change as well. You’ll probably see less droopy pants falling off kids butts and more sense of style, creativity and functionality in their wardrobe.
I will admit that I have gotten a lot of respect from teens I have encountered on the slopes. I have been impressed with their sense of rules, safety and fairness in the rare times I ride through the terrain parks (the areas where snowboarders and skiers go to ride rails, jumps and other features). Many youths have made a point to tell me that that they think it is cool that I am a snowboarder. They have often told me they wish their parents snowboarded also.
There are over 1,000,000 adult snowboarders so you definitely will not be a novelty on the hill. I have meet snowboard instructors around the age of 70 and have been impressed with their riding skills and their youthful spirit. You will find that there is typically extensive instructor training for all ages of instructors. Look for the AASI logo pins on instructor parkas indicating they are members of and
