THE GATEWAY

The roadbed gradually pulls away from the oceanfront strand at lower Nags Head, leaving behind the clutter of motels and cottages as it begins to undulate in gentle patterns across the wide stretches of marshland and sandy beach.

In the first light of approaching dawn, a giant blue heron rises from a pond beside the road, flapping his great wings in ponderous effort as if to signal that day has come. A lazy swan raises his long neck, then upends himself, pointing his tail skyward as he searches the bottom of the pond for the day’s first morsel. Nearby, a pair of redheaded ducks stand straight in the water, wildly exercising their wings, then settle back to preen their feathers.

The roadbed straightens, then rises gradually, leaving the marsh and beach behind as it moves out over open water.
