Saved By the Wolf - Lori Whyte

    PROLOGUE

Nearly thirty years ago, the second generation of the Kelly family was swept into a nightmare. Janice Kelly, wife to Will and mother to two boys, Jeff and Jacob, died.

These twins were not ordinary children, for their father was a werewolf, which meant they too carried the wolf gene.

Janice had loved her husband and her boys with all her heart, and they had loved her, so when she died, they suffered a deep and devastating grief. When Will saw his boys become angry and withdrawn, he knew he had to take action.

So the grieving husband set aside his pride, which was no easy task for an alpha wolf, and approached a powerful witch named Suzanne Stuart for help. Suzanne's magic was passed down to her from ancient times, generation to generation, so the power running through her veins was well-aged and potent. But no matter the witch's strength, she desired something she could not give herself: Will as her werewolf mate.

If he had known of her secret obsession with him, he may not have turned to her in his desperation, for her desire for the wolf grew when she witnessed the depth of his grief. She wanted those intense feelings for herself, so she wove a special enchantment over them.

It was so simple, she thought: In exchange for helping Will with his family's grief, he would spend one night in her arms and shower on her all the passionate love he'd once shared with his wife.

But it is a dangerous thing to cast a spell on a werewolf...

    CHAPTER 1

    JACOB

    Morning of the Blizzard

Jacob Kelly circled his rustic kitchen for the millionth time. Each moment the moon swelled a little more with the weight of its power, the urge to surrender to his primitive need to shift to his wolf form and claim his mate intensified.

He flattened his mouth. If Alanna—for there was no question she was his mate—saw him running at her with desire in his eyes, she'd probably hit him with her car. As she should. She deserved to be cherished, and sure, he wanted to do that. But he also wanted to destroy her for anyone else. He wanted her as consumed by thoughts of him as he was of her. He wanted everything from her.

He needed control. Always. It was the reason he was the pack leader. Except his need for control didn’t stop at the bedroom door. Before his wolf had recognized Alanna as his, Jacob had experimented. He understood his own kinks, had revelled in them. Right up until Alanna turned eighteen and he knew she was his mate. That had screwed everything up because Alanna didn’t submit to anyone. No, he couldn’t picture her interested in the kind of bedroom activities he’d want to do with her.

A growl rumbled at the back of his throat. His wolf disagreed.

Stupid wolf. He couldn’t see that it was better to keep things civil and platonic, than risk her looking at him with disgust and shock. He wouldn’t survive a rejection like that from his mate. It was bad enough that she already avoided him, like she knew exactly what he fantasized about, and she wanted nothing to do with it.

If his wolf had his choice, he’d find a way to turn her to his way of thinking, sooner rather than later. All his beast thought about was wanting to claim her as his mate. And every full moon the compulsion to do exactly that grew stronger.

What was worse, though, was that he had never felt the pull of the moon so strongly as he did these last few months. If it continued like this, the need for her would only get stronger with each lunar cycle for the rest of his life. If Alanna officially rejected him, he'd have to lock himself in a cage at the waxing of the moon.

    Yeah, like that would work.

You haven’t even tried, his wolf whined.

The damned wolf was right, but that didn’t change anything. It wasn’t the right time. It was better to live with this ache than no there was no hope at all.

Jacob gripped the edge of his counter and peered out at the pre-dawn morning. A few columns of moonlight pierced through the gathering storm clouds. Under their magic, his body rippled with the urge to give into his wolf. His claws extended even as he tightened his hold.

A howl of irritation spread from his chest, but he stopped it before it disrupted the quiet of his house—not because he would disturb anyone, but because he couldn't allow himself to lose control, to submit to the beast inside him.

He jerked away from the window, his claws dragging across the surface of the counter, leaving a distinctive thick scrape through the cheap Formica. He scowled and added the kitchen to his list of future renovations.

Jacob paced the length of the room. Between the imminent storm and the bloating of the moon, his wolf itched to be free.

Go to her. Find her. Make sure she’s safe. Claim her.

This would be a hell of a lot easier if she had ever acknowledged him as more than her older brother's friend. Both he and his beast knew she was the one for them, but he didn't think she would appreciate him going all caveman on her.

But how could he be this affected, and she feel nothing? She couldn't be immune to this, could she? Did she feel this overwhelming urge to be near him too? Apparently not, considering how she tried to avoid him.

Thoughts like that led to trouble.

And so he paced. For hours. His restlessness didn't ease when the daylight or the winter storm obscured the silvery moon.

When his cell phone rang, he pounced on it. He greeted the caller with little more than a growl. His wolf was chafing under the surface now.

    Alanna mumbled a hello.

Jacob gripped the phone tight in his hand and glanced at his clock.
