Spring Petals Gone Graphic

FINISHED BLOCK SIZE: 9˝ × 9˝ • FINISHED QUILT SIZE: 37½˝ × 37½

Spring Petals Gone Graphic is made of eight petal blocks 9˝ × 9˝ held together with simple, repeated center units. This flower section can be repeated four times on point or in a straight set to create a larger quilt, or the blocks can be used in a line to make a table runner. Mix and match the blocks to create a project featuring your favorite colors or fat quarters.

MATERIALS

Yardage is based on 42˝ width.

•Bright pink: 2 fat quarters for Block A

•Apricot: 2 fat quarters for Block B and Unit C

•White-with-black print: 1 fat quarter for Unit C

•Solid black: 1 fat quarter for Block A and Unit C

•Coordinating print: 1 fat quarter for Center D

•Black-with-white print: 3 fat quarters for Block A, Block B, and Backgrounds E, F, and G

•Binding: ⅞ yard

•Backing: 42˝ × 42˝

•Batting: 42˝ × 42˝

CUTTING

WOF = width of fabric

BRIGHT PINK

•Cut 2 strips 9½˝ × 20˝.

Subcut into 4 squares 9½˝ × 9½˝.

APRICOT

•Cut 2 strips 9½˝ × 20˝.

Subcut into 4 squares 9½˝ × 9½˝.

From the remaining fabric, cut 4 pieces 1½˝ × 3½˝.

WHITE-WITH-BLACK PRINT

•Cut 2 strips 3½˝ × 20˝.

Subcut into 8 squares 3½˝ × 3½˝.

SOLID BLACK

•Cut 2 strips 3½˝ × 20˝.

Subcut into 8 squares 3½˝ × 3½˝.

•Cut 1 strip 3½˝ × 20˝.

Subcut into 8 pieces 1½˝ × 3½˝.

COORDINATING PRINT

•Cut 1 square 9½˝ × 9½˝.

BLACK-WITH-WHITE PRINT

See cutting diagrams.

•Cut 12 squares 3½˝ × 3½˝.

•Cut 4 pieces 2½˝ × 9½˝.

•Cut 4 pieces 5½˝ × 9½˝.

•Cut 4 pieces 5½˝ × 14½˝.

Cutting for black-with-white print

BINDING

•Cut 4 strips 2½˝ × WOF for double-fold binding.

INSTRUCTIONS

All seam allowances are ¼˝.

BLOCK ASSEMBLY

Mark a line from corner to corner on the wrong side of all the 3½˝ × 3½˝ squares.

Mark diagonal lines.

Block A

1. Place a marked white-with-black print square and a marked black-with-white print square on opposite corners of a large bright pink square, right sides together. Sew just inside the line of each small square (see Sewing a Scant ¼˝ Seam). Trim, leaving a ¼˝ seam allowance. Make 4.

Sew and trim.

Sew just next to line.

2. Press the small corners open. Trim each block to 9½˝ × 9½˝ if necessary. Make 4.

Block A

Block B

1. Place a marked white-with-black print square and a marked black-with-white print square on opposite corners of a large apricot square, right sides together. Sew just inside the line of each small square (see Sewing a Scant ¼˝ Seam,). Trim, leaving a ¼˝ seam allowance. Make 4.

Sew and trim.

2. Press the small corners open. Trim each block to 9½˝ × 9½˝ if necessary. Make 4.

Block B

Unit C

Sew a solid black strip on each side of an apricot strip. Sew a white-with-black print square on each side of this unit. Press. Make 4.

Unit C

CENTER SQUARE

1. Place a marked solid black square on each corner of the large coordinating print square, right sides together. Sew just inside the line of each small square (see Sewing a Scant ¼˝ Seam,). Trim, leaving a ¼˝ seam allowance. Make 1.

Sew and trim.

2. Press the small corners open. Trim the block to 9½˝ × 9½˝ if necessary. Make 1.

Center square

QUILT CONSTRUCTION

1. Refer to the quilt layout diagram to arrange the blocks, units, and black-with-white print background pieces.

2. Sew together the pieces into rows. Press.

3. Sew together the rows. Press.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

1. Mark quilting designs on the quilt top or plan to stitch without marking.

2. Layer the backing, batting, and quilt top. Use your preferred method to baste the 3 layers together.

3. Quilt as desired.

4. Bind the quilt.

ADD:

•Apricot fabric: 1½ yards for background corner squares eplace the binding, backing, and batting with:

•Binding fabric: ½ yard

•Backing: 57˝ × 57˝

•Batting: 57˝ × 57˝

CUTTING

Follow the cutting instructions for Spring Petals Gone Graphic.

ADD:

•From the apricot, cut 2 squares 27˝ × 27˝; then cut each square diagonally once from corner to corner.

Replace the binding cutting with:

•Cut 6 strips 2½˝ × WOF for double-fold binding.

INSTRUCTIONS

All seam allowances are ¼˝.

1. Follow the Block Assembly instructions for Spring Petals Gone Graphic.

2. Add the background corner triangles. Press.

3. Follow the Quilting and Finishing instructions for Spring Petals Gone Graphic.

Straight Set with Borders

MATERIALS

Yardage is based on 42˝ width.

Follow the materials list for Spring Petals Gone Graphic.

ADD:

•Inner border: ¼ yard (You can use a fat quarter if you want to sew 2 shorter strips together to make the length needed for each border strip.)

•Outer border: 1⅛ yards

Replace the binding, backing, and batting with:

•Binding: ½ yard

•Backing: 54˝ × 54˝

•Batting: 54˝ × 54˝

CUTTING

Follow the cutting instructions for Spring Petals Gone Graphic.

ADD:

•Cut the inner border fabric into 4 strips 1½˝ × WOF.

Subcut into 2 rectangles 1½˝ × 37½˝ and 2 rectangles 1½˝ × 39½˝.

•Cut the outer border fabric into 5 strips 5½˝ × WOF.

Subcut into 2 rectangles 5½˝ × 39½˝ and 2 rectangles 5½˝ × 49½˝, piecing as needed.

Replace the binding cutting with:

•Cut 6 strips 2½˝ × WOF for double-fold binding.

INSTRUCTIONS

All seam allowances are ¼˝.

2. Add the shorter inner border strips to the sides of the quilt top. Press. Then add the longer inner border strips to the top and bottom of the quilt top. Press.
