    Chapter One

The Past Comes Back to Haunt

He’s out, Millie. Got out three days ago.

My whole body seized up in terror. My first instinct was to grab my car keys and flee as fast as I could without looking back. Blood pulsed in my ears and my heart raced.

But I couldn’t run. I’d worked too hard and done too much. I rose slowly and carefully from my desk chair but froze halfway to my office door.

    Millie…?

The sound of the old nickname swept over me in a wave of dreaded nostalgia. I felt the familiar bands of anxiety attempt to hijack my breath. No. I would not allow this. Not now. My heart lurched in my chest. I forced oxygen into my lungs. Millie Bresden was gone, dead. It was as if his attempt on my life had succeeded, and now in her place was me, Molly Dresden.

    Are you still there, baby?

I’m here, Mama. I held the phone to my ear with a trembling hand, but my voice came out sure and confident. The last five years had taught me to hide my fear, to hide any emotion. This moment was what I’d emotionally trained for.

    What’re you going to do?

That was a question loaded with unthinkable possibilities. Even though I’d planned for this day, knew it eventually would come, I didn’t feel ready. I’m not sure what could’ve prepared me for it. Nothing.

But he said he’d come after you.

The frantic worry underlying her tone knotted in my brain. I closed my eyes to regain my composure. David was out of prison. Released early.

I can’t run anymore, Mama. I ran from South Bend, and I’ve made a life here in Chicago. Let him come.

But, honey, he said he’d kill you when he got out. They were supposed to call you and warn you.

I’m sure they couldn’t find me. I closed my eyes. And shook my head at the irony. As you know, I’ve been off the grid.

After the trial, I’d packed up my belongings, left my family and what few friends remained, moved, changed my name, and altered my appearance.

Now, six years later, I looked far different from the girl I’d been, but it was more than that. I was changed on the inside, too. Shelly, my counselor and now best friend, had helped me transform from the cowering battered girl into the woman I was today. The sudden urge to call her overwhelmed me, but I held the need in abeyance until I could ascertain the risk.

    Have you seen him yet?

No, baby. His mama went to get him day before yesterday. Gerald called me this morning, wondering if I knew.

Gerald was David’s uncle, his father’s brother, and one of the few in town who’d believed my story. One of the few in town who hadn’t hated me for sending their local hero to jail and ruining his—and their—chances for college football glory.

I guess they thought my broken bones, bruises, and punctured lung were symptoms of some strange anomaly and not the near deadly beating their hero had been capable of.

"David’s telling everybody he found the Lord in prison and wants to make things right. They say that’s how
