About this ebook

The object of this book is to illustrate the villas along the Brenta River as they appeared in the 18th century, and as they may be admired today from the river barge (Burchiello) going from Padova to Venice and vice-versa during the months (April-October) in which Mother Nature completes the suggestive architectural beauty of so many buildings in this tract of Venetian earth.

The splendid Riviera del Brenta - Paolo Tieto

    MALCONTENTA AND ORIAGO

Little remains today of the structures that Costa saw on the last strips of dry land where the Brenta river empties into the lagoon; the typical Venetian country houses of Lizza Fusina no longer exist, nor does the architectural complex of Moranzan (the water gate dating back to 1609 was covered with earth in 1964), and not even the Tavern of Botteghin, nor the Marcello mansion with its extensive surroundings. Villa Foscari, better known as the Malcontenta, is the first of a long procession of images to appear, like a vision in the midst of the abandoned countryside. The sedate linear harmony and the grace of the portico with imposing Ionic columns immediately leads one to consider the extraordinary genius of one of the major architects of the Italian Renaissance, Palladio, but then the eye lingers on the reflected image of that building in the nearby waterway, as if desiring to find the shadow of the beautiful Foscarina, condemned to live within those walls for the rest of her life after a voluptuous and dissolute youth. It's only a legend, popular folklore, because information on the Malcontenta locality dates back to the 15th century: nonetheless, the story blends in well with the atmosphere of the place and the almost sacral spirit of the façade, which incidentally is very different from the southern exposure towards the garden where the harmony of the doors, windows, arches and gables seems to have left the constructor more space for invention. This marvelous building, which is the prototype of a new way to conceive the patrician country residences, played a part in many historical events, but the most important was indeed the visit of Henry III, king of France, in July 1574.

Just beyond this locality, there remain only a few rural houses, attractive with their typical chimneys and vivid colors, which the farmers love for their homes. This is the territory of Malcanton, known for many bitter disputes and quarrels between Venice and the Carraresi family, but also regrettably famous because Jacopo del Cassero died here.

Further on, beyond the remains of the mansion with the tower of the Carraresi family, and at the end of a double file of trees that forms a perspective backdrop, there is the villa Priuli-Bon. Its construction dates back to the 16th century, but the loggia was added to decorate the façade in the following century. Although the loggia calls to mind Falconetto's Loggia Cornaro in Padova, nonetheless with its three majestic arches it constitutes a unique
