About this ebook

1400 AD, NEW JÜTLAND Hendrick van Kortrijk, a celebrated navigator and prodigious drunk, soured by nightmares and scarred by a half-year in bonds, is cast out by his estranged wife and charged with finding his soul. With naught to lose he signs aboard the kind of voyage most can only dream of. They are to chart the undiscovered coasts of West Aethopia and find a sea-route to the mythical kingdom of Malia, the source of most gold, spices and slaves that come across the deserts of Aethopia. The journey is frought with peril; they must sail through foul weather, hostile waters, the ire of a witch and colliding conspiracies to find what they're searching for... and all without a guarantee of ever making it home again.

Oh Hendrick. A gutsy, scarred, volatile character and one of my all time favourites. A story of piracy on the high seas, David Black avoids clichés in character and plot and manages to enmesh tenderness with battles and logic with lunacy. The plot, in its many twists and turns, will keep you guessing as Black takes risks with his characters that prevent them from being predictable or boring. This is an action-packed, soul searching adventure.

Set against an alternate historical backdrop, Hendrick and his fellow sailors battle against slavery, rotting timbers, ailments, piracy and poor provisions in search of new lands and wealth. With fortune against them, and the loss of many men, Hendrick's biggest battle must be fought within. Having been cast out by his wife and estranged from his children, Hendrick has the almighty task of searching for his soul at sea, and discovering whether his marriage and his integrity can withstand the perils of the journey.

If this book saw film rights, it would be epic.

An exceptional read! It was incredibly well written. Hendrick is a broken man who rekindles his fire through blood and adventure. Driven by survival he is thrust into an unwanted life of piracy which turns out he has a knack for. This should definitely be on your summer reading list!!

This is an alternate history set in the age of discovery.

Hendrick, a dutchman who thinks he's a viking, hits rock bottom and is kicked out by his wife, but is offered a high risk / high reward path to redemption. Hendrick is dry and caustic at times but he's driven by infectious hope and courage. There's a good many twists and turns and never an easy way out but the story holds course. Liberal swearing as befits a book about sailors, and sex and violence can be graphic but strictly serve the story.

I promise it'll leave you wanting more.
