    Calum’s Dilemma

Calum leaned forward over the saddle and kicked his heels to push York’s magnificent stallion beyond its comfortable fast gallop to what it was really capable of. And what it was capable of was terrifying. He could ride, but this wasn’t riding, this was cling on or die.

He wanted to close his eyes to make the blur streaming past him go away, but he had to believe he had some control over the animal, at least a little.

Enough, catching Dutronc wasn’t worth being smashed to bloody meat against a tree. His fingers tightened on the reins, then eased off.

    Just one more minute.

He realised how insane that was, at least a part of his brain did, the rest was starting to enjoy the heart-stopping thrill of thundering down the narrow trail at close to forty miles an hour.

It couldn’t last, and that part of his brain that had retained some sanity hoped it wouldn’t.

The stallion skidded around a tight right-hand bend and churned up the trail as it dug for traction to take off again. Calum eased back the reins and patted its neck. The horse slowed to a canter, then a walk and snorted, m’be in thanks for the rest.

The trail followed the riverbank in a curve until it straightened out as it approached the rapids. He sat up in the saddle and let the huge stallion walk and blow. Up ahead he could see Dutronc standing in the middle of a grassy clearing leading down to the water. He was facing the trail and holding his sword loosely in his right hand.

Calum knew why Dutronc had stopped. It might have been because he couldn’t outrun a pursuit whilst carrying the regimental standard on its cumbersome pike, or because he didn’t want to be shot in the back by some overeager trooper. But it was neither of these. He’d stopped because he knew he could beat anyone who might be following.

He was either very good or very arrogant. And Calum knew which it was. The man was a brute, but he was a colonel in the finest regiment in an elite European army, and he hadn’t got there by playing nice. He’d had to fight his way up, against his peers and against his superiors, who’d keep him down if he wasn’t good enough.

Calum dismounted twenty feet from the clearing and brushed the leaves and twigs from his clothes. If he was going to die, he’d look his best.

Dutronc was smiling as he watched Calum approach, and gave him a sweeping bow.

The Scotch. I should have guessed this. He tilted his head. I thought you dead when those fools fired at you. But I see you are not. Yet.

Everybody dies, Calum said. How and where doesn’t really matter.

Dutronc nodded agreement. So, Maclean, what is it to be? Pistols or the sword? He raised his sword a little.

    Calum drew his smallsword.

Ah, an excellent choice. A gentleman’s weapon.

Are you a religious man, Dutronc? Calum asked.

Dutronc thought about it. I was, but I have seen too many men die in horror to believe there is anything or anyone beyond this. He moved his sword around in a half circle to encompass the forest and river.

Calum could see it was a smallsword like his, but more ornate with a silver and gilt hilt. There was not even the smallest blemish on the
