    Chapter 1

    Tropical Storm Edith lashes the southeast with heavy winds and rain. The storm, which intensified last week when it crossed into the Gulf of Mexico from the Atlantic, made landfall overnight in Pensacola, Florida. The storm was pushed on a northeasterly track by a high pressure system crossing the plains. Although it has been downgraded to a tropical storm since making landfall shortly after midnight, Georgia and the Carolinas are still in danger of heavy rains, high winds, possible tornadoes, and potential flooding. Flights from Florida through the Carolinas are grounded, and Interstates are jammed with accidents and traffic from last minute evacuations and those attempting to take to the roads when flights were grounded an hour ago. Tens of thousands in Florida and Georgia are without power, and reports are coming in of power failures in South Carolina. Residents in these areas are urged to stay indoors until the storm passes.
