About this ebook

This book was too much and not enough. The many, many attempts on the main chica's (Laura) life became numbing. I lost my ability to feel suspense...in a suspense story :/

Javier and Laura's relationship was very slow burning, and it should have been because of the emotional and physical trauma Laura suffered due to her kidnapping. At the same time though, this slowness didn't feel sensual or anticipatory. I hate to say it but I felt bored. I didn't feel the chemistry between Javier and Laura.

There was just way too many story threads going on here. Laura's kidnapping trauma, Javier's combat PTSD, Laura wanting to get her child, Nassar's (Laura's kidnapper) call to brother-in-arms to kill her, Tower's (owner of company who was assigned to protect Laura and went bankrupt when failed to do so) wanting revenge, soldier wanting revenge for a story Laura did years ago, and finally was Ali a terrorist, are terrorist trying to kill Laura? I'm even probably missing something.

Whew, that was exhausting to type, imagine how it was to read. I was so excited to read this story but it just wasn't for me. I needed more and less.

*It's getting rave reviews on GR so it could be I have a shitty opinion. :)

This storyline is a little bit like "Hard to Hold" by Stephanie Tyler. I rated that one 5stars and loved it. Just in my humble opinion, done better.

As anyone can tell from my list of recent reads, I love romance novels. It's pretty much all I read these days. And I don't care how unrealistic they may be, I love every well-written HEA, love-at-first-sight, true-love, etc. story I can get. What set Striking Distance apart was the depth and maturity of the relationship between Laura and Javier. I seem to remember seeing a quote from the author somewhere that she wrote two pages for every page that actually made it into the book. Perhaps that's the reason that this one seems so much more layered than many novels I've read recently (including the rest of the I-Team novels which are already some of the best out there), or maybe it's just that there's so much more knowledge of the supporting characters six+ books into the series. (Lordy, how I love seeing them in each progressive book.) Even the epilogue stood apart from others in that it brings us much further into the future than usual, adding to the depth of the characters' relationship. Whatever the case, I think this was one of, if not *the* best in the series. (And having "First Strike" out there as an extra was just icing on the cake. It was both nice and sad to see both characters in a much lighter time but what it really did was add that foundation for everything that comes afterwards.) Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys romantic suspense.

Overall I thought this was a good book. However it's not my thing. There is a HEA but I want a good huge HEA not a realistic one.

Striking Distance.....Pamela Clare This story is incredible! I've been concerned that my review would not do it justice. Then a very wise friend and best selling author said to me "Pat, write what you feel." First of all, if you haven't read First Strike, stop what your doing and go read it. It is a prequel for Striking Distance, a short novella, and helps things fall in to place very quickly, not to mention a steamy read! Javier Cobray is a battle hardened SEAL who for the last 18 months has been on a personal mission to eradicate the al-Qaeda cell that kidnapped and murdered a journalist, Laura Nillson, with whom he had a brief erotic weekend in Dubai. Javi only had a couple days with her, and it was supposed to be "no strings" but when he left her, he knew he would be looking her up. Until that day he saw on live T.V. her brutal kidnapping, a deadly shoot out, and the claim by her captors she had been executed.Laura Nillson never knew the name of the "tall SEAL" and his team who seemed to drop out of the sky, and raid the al-Qaeda compound where she was held. All she knew was that she heard American voices, and she had to get to them. They treated her with utmost respect, but the tall SEAL was forever in her memory. He carried her onto the helo, gave her a blanket, and happily punched her tormentor when he said evil intimidating things to her. She was free. Two years later, she is physically healthy and working for the I-Team in Denver, specializing in veteran's issues. This is her way of paying back her rescuers. There is a death threat from her former captor hanging over her head, and a heartbreaking secret she can tell no one. Nightmares still haunt her, but she falls back on her grandmothers words "Everything gets better with time." Then at a barbecue, with friends and spouses of I-Team members, she sees Javi again. This novel is filled with danger, suspense, revenge, old friends and a lot of love. I went through waves of emotions while reading this, always having tissues near. I have read every one of Ms. Clare's I-Team novels, some multiple times, and listened to the audio versions. In my opinion, this one is the best yet. It is with great pleasure I highly recommend this novel. It deserves so much more than five stars. I guarantee I will be re-reading this story. Thank you for the advice my friend......I have written what I feel. I received this novel from the publisher and author for an honest review.Pat Fordyce
