Acting out is a big umbrella term. It can encompass an array of things.
Here are a few examples of acting out.
Your 12 year old son is mad, because he cannot pass a level in a video game so he throws his game control at the TV and cracks the screen.
Your teenager got in late last weekend so you told him that he cannot go out for social engagements for the next two weeks. He gets mad and kicks a hole in the wall before going up to his room to stew.
Your teenager daughter is dressing like she wants to try Burlesque for an after school activity. When you tell her that the outfit is inappropriate and that she needs to change, she throws a tantrum like she has been transformed into a two year old.
Acting out can manifest from your teenager's inability to solve their problems effectively. Acting out usually helps them let out their frustration and anxiety.
