Titles in the series (10)
- Animal Virus Structure
3
Animal Virus Structure provides a comprehensive, state-of-the-art summary of the structure, molecular composition, and principal antigenic and biological properties of each currently recognized family of animal viruses. Information deriving from electron microscopy, computer image processing and X-ray diffraction is integrated systematically with biochemical data into three-dimensional molecular models of viral architecture. A brief account of virus/cell interaction and pathogenicity completes each chapter.
- Arenaviruses
2
Perspectives in Medical Virology was conceived after many discussions with teachers of postgraduate students, research workers, medical virologists, and students. A number of distinguished practising virologists were then invited to assemble the important information available and to integrate research at the basic level with clinical practice in selected subjects for the new series. The aim of this series is to promote dissemination of information, useful discussion and exchange of ideas and stimulate further interest and research in medical virology. This second volume explores the nature and properties of the arenaviridae family in a way that is hoped will stimulate further experimentation in as yet unexplored areas of arenavirus research.
- Viral Haemorrhagic Fevers
11
In recent years there has been a resurgence of interest in studying infectious diseases, especially given the alarming increase in the numbers of emerging diseases now confronting medical and veterinary science. Viral Haemorrhagic Fevers describes the progress in research and our understanding of these agents against a backdrop of continuing fear these viruses engender among health care workers and the public alike. It discusses how the study of these viral agents is directly applicable to other emerging diseases, particularly in relation to how containing these outbreaks requires a high degree of collaboration between different specialists. Primarily aimed at healthcare workers, clinicians and microbiologists, this book provides a rapid overview as to the nature of these widely varying agents linked only by their propensity of causing serious human disease.
- Congenital and Other Related Infectious Diseases of the Newborn
13
This book is directed toward the molecular composition, pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment and control of congenital and other related diseases of the newborn that are caused by a variety of viruses. These viruses comprise several families that include Herpesviridae (HSV-1, HSV-2, HSV-6, HSV-7, CMV and varcilla-zoster); Parvoviridae (parvovirus B19); Lentiviridae (HIV); Hepadnaviridae (HBV); Flaviviridae (HCV); and Togaviridae (RV). Leading researchers in childhood diseases and virology from Brazil, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Spain, and the United States of America report on the up-to-date advances in the molecular virology, immunology, biochemistry, pathology, diagnosis, prevalence and treatment of selected congenital and other related diseases of the newborn. * Contains recommendations for diagnosis, risk assessment, prophylaxis and treatment of viral and parasitic infections of most organisms involved in congenital diseases * An impressive list of internationally known scientists in the field of congenital diseases and related subjects
- Human Herpesviruses HHV-6A, HHV-6B and HHV-7: Diagnosis and Clinical Management
12
Completely revised and updated, Human Herpesviruses HHV-6A, HHV-6B & HHV-7, Third Edition, delivers a contemporary and thorough review of HHV-6, beginning with foundational explorations of classification, molecular biology, and chromosomal integration of the virus, through to clinical details, including pathologic features of infection, and clinical effects on various organ systems. The work now includes coverage of HHV-7, a virus that remains underestimated in transplant reactivation, seizures, and encephalitis. The book examines the role of HHV-6 in myriad diseases, including cognitive disorders following bone marrow transplant, mesial temporal lobe epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, autoimmune disease, encephalitis, Hodgkin's disease lymphoma (HHV-6B), and glioma (HHV-6A). Descriptions of current and novel molecular and serological diagnostic assays, along with detailed protocols, are included to aid researchers and clinicians in discriminating potential false positives originating from chromosomally integrated HHV-6, and in differentiating between active and latent infection. Human Herpesviruses HHV-6A, HHV-6B & HHV-7, Third Edition is a valuable reference for both clinical and basic scientists, including epidemiologists, virologists, practicing clinicians, infectious disease specialists, pathologists, and all scientists entering the field of herpes virus research. The work is a practical and thorough resource for a foundational understanding of HHV-6 and HHV-7, while providing a cutting-edge translational and clinical reference to those looking to understand and diagnose associated viral diseases. Delivers the latest molecular diagnostic tests, the present-day gold standard for monitoring HHV-6 Provides expert analysis of T-cell immune response against HHV-6 Presents tools for differential diagnosis in HHV-6 viral infections Includes new information on the previously-largely-unknown biological consequences of ciHHV-6 Offers coverage of new discoveries relating to HHV-7
- Respiratory Syncytial Virus
14
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) was first identified half a century ago in 1956. Following its discovery, the virus soon became recognised as a major viral pathogen causing extensive outbreaks of respiratory tract infections in both the very young and in vulnerable adults. It is an unusual virus in that it can cause repeated reinfections throughout life. The topics covered within this volume are wide ranging in scope from the most basic molecular biology of the virus to the clinical picture of RSV in the developing world. The internationally recognised experts were invited not only to review the present state of knowledge but also to give their perspective on the current situation and to identify the gaps and future requirements for research in an effort to stimulate new cross-cutting approaches to tackle this major viral pathogen.
- Rubella Viruses
15
This latest volume provides a comprehensive review of the latest developments and research studies on the pathogenesis and molecular biology of human congenital infections. It reviews current diagnostic techniques and epidemiological data while describing the progress in research and understanding of continuing prevention of congenital infections and prognosis.
- Emerging Viruses in Human Populations
16
Infectious diseases are an ever present threat to humans. In recent years, the threat of these emerging viruses has been greater than ever before in human history, due in large part to global travel by larger numbers of people, and to a lesser extent to disruptions in the interface between developed and undeveloped areas. The emergence of new deadly viruses in human populations during recent decades has confirmed this risk. They remain the third leading cause of deaths in the US and the second world-wide. Emerging Viruses in Human Populations provides a comprehensive review of viruses that are emerging or that threaten to emerge among human populations in the twenty-first century. It discusses the apprehension over emerging viruses that has intensified due to concerns about bioterrorism. * Presents the history of emerging viruses * Includes chapters on SARS, Pandemic Threat of Avian Influenza Viruses, West Nile Virus, Monkeypox Virus, Hantavirus, Nipah Virus and Hendra Virus, Japanese Encephalitis Virus, Dengue and Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever Viruses * Discusses surveillance for newly emerging diseases
