Holding his little sister as she continued to sob, Danny sat on the cold wet floor. The feeling of the ocean of life once lived sitting stale around him as he gently petted her soaked hair. He had never witnessed anything like what he saw his sister do, never seeing anything move that fast and now they both sat in shock. Starring into the purpling sky the hawk soared above them letting out another scream, it had seen much death today.
It’s going to be okay.
The young man continued to whisper into her ear though it was more of a reassurance to him.
After their argument Oliver and David both stood quietly, taking in what they had just witnessed. Everything happened so quickly it was nearly a blur. What he did know, was that this woman had just saved their lives. Seven of the undead had stood outside the door, getting ready to burst their way through. If she hadn’t had stopped them, everyone would be gone. It would only take two or three of them to wipe everyone out, they had an unholy speed. Through the year and a half, the group found that the best way to fight them was to be two steps ahead; consistently imagining what one of the greatest hunters the world had ever seen would do next.
Walking over to the pair, Oliver leaned down to Danny. We have to get this cleaned up.
The one thing the monsters were attracted to was life. Once dead, they had learned people would bury or burn bodies. Humans would find any way they could not only to say goodbye but to dispose of their dead in a clean and humane way. The years of that were now over. Death knew where to look now, and what to look for, even the smell of rotting flesh sometimes held the promise of life close by.
