Stellar Reclamation - Kimberli Renee Campbell

    June 29, 2150

Sebastian stared at the 20-inch television mounted on the wall of his small motel room, watching a live broadcast of the President of the United States. His clasped hands rested across his chest as he reclined against the creaky headboard of the queen-size bed. The peeling baby blue wallpaper, decorated with multi-colored crayon scribbles, didn't bother him, but his left eye twitched uncontrollably at the sound of the President's cheerful voice.

A monumental moment in history had arrived. The United States, along with many other countries, were seconds away from launching the first worldwide civilian space shuttles. Men, women, and children of all nations would live their lives amongst the stars on self-sustaining space stations the size of small moons. Planet Earth had reached its capacity for life. Now it would have a chance to replenish itself.

As the President began the ten-second countdown, Sebastian reached for the small cell phone lying next to him, keyed in ten numbers and pressed the phone against his ear.

    Hello, a scruffy voice answered.

Sebastian watched white smoke billow around the shuttle as it launched into the sky. Initiate Operation Ominous.

Sebastian dropped the phone. A sinister grin crept across his face. So it begins.

    CHAPTER 1

    Sixteen years later…

Tyler adjusted the rearview mirror to keep a large black SUV, five cars back, in his sight. Tinted windows kept him from seeing inside the vehicle. The glare of the sun didn't help. He was certain the car had followed him from the high school.

The sound of the final school bell brought Tyler's attention back to the front doors of the elementary school. Loud, excited children burst through the front doors and scattered like ants. Tyler tapped on the steering wheel. Come on, Jordan.

He went back to watching the SUV. Who would want to follow him? The FBI? Maybe they wanted him for a secret mission. Tyler rolled his eyes at the crazy thought. Watching too many spy movies gave him an over active imagination.

The back passenger door opened, catching him off guard. Tyler jerked his head, hitting it on the window. Ow!

His ten-year-old brother climbed inside and buckled his seatbelt. What are you doing?

Nothing. Tyler adjusted the rearview mirror before pulling away from the curb. What took you so long?

Computer lab. Jordan removed a computer tablet from his backpack. Sorry.

Tyler didn't hear his brother; his attention was focused on the SUV. It pulled out at the same time he did. Tyler took a few deep breaths. It wasn't his imagination.

What are you doing? asked Jordan.

    Nothing.

    You said that already.

We're being followed. Tyler bit his lip for blurting it out. He didn't want to scare Jordan.

Really?! Jordan twisted his restrained body to look out the rear window.

Tyler chuckled. It figured his genius brother would be excited about it.

Are you going to speed up and try to lose them?

This isn't the movies, Jordan. I'm going to the police station.

The SUV matched every turn and light until Tyler pulled into the parking lot of the station. The vehicle sped past and out of sight. Tyler leaned his head back against the headrest. When we get home, I want to tell Mom and Dad about the black car. Got it?

He watched Jordan cross his arms and frown. Fine.

    *****

Tyler slowed the car as he turned onto their street. All the houses looked the same — beige, cookie cutter middle class homes. Today his stood out. There were four black SUV's parked in front. His heart raced as he pulled into the driveway. Tyler turned to face Jordan. What did you do?

It wasn't me. Jordan turned off the tablet. I don't think.

The two boys exited the car and walked past six black-suited professional football player-sized men standing in the yard. Tyler put his arm around Jordan and led him into the house. Inside, another man led them into the family room where their parents sat.

    What's going on? asked Tyler.

A tall man, in a military uniform covered in medals, stood and faced him. If you'll take a seat, I can explain.

Tyler studied the man. He looked like he'd seen many battles. The scar on his chin gave him a tough guy look, but his voice seemed calm and kind. Tyler sat down on the love seat, while Jordan joined their parents on the couch.

The military man sat down on the edge of the leather recliner. My name is Commander Stephen Klein. Before we begin, please accept my apology for the high security. What I'm about to share with you must not be shared with anyone.

Tyler glanced over at his parents. They smiled and nodded. What could the military want with his family? Jordan was a born genius. Was it possible they needed his little brother's help with a high tech computer system? The commander opened the manila folder revealing several pictures of a young man. He picked up an 8x11 photo and handed it to Tyler.

Commander Klein continued, His name is Sebastian Williams. He's twenty-nine in this photo. He was a brilliant consultant for the government many years before the civilian space launch. Unfortunately, he had his own agenda. National leaders wanted peace after all the devastation war wreaked upon our planet. Sebastian wanted war to prove he could create the ultimate soldier. He wouldn't let it go and became mentally unstable.

Tyler took the photo. The man's eyes were dark and empty. His black stringy hair hung down, in one length, to his shoulders. Creepy. What happened to him?

I'm afraid that's what brings me here today. On the day of the civilian launch, the world focused on this special event. At the same moment, Sebastian devised a plan to...

The solemn expression the commander's face worried Tyler. What terrible thing did this Sebastian guy do?

Forgive me. Commander Klein cleared his throat. He did the unthinkable. He abducted hundreds of orphaned children from facilities around the world to create his own army.

The gasp from Tyler's parents startled him. His mother had tears running down her face and pulled Jordan close. How could someone do such a horrible thing?

Tyler didn't want to sound insensitive, but he needed to know. What does this have to do with our family, sir?

"Since the abduction, I've spent every waking hour trying to find Sebastian and rescue those children. Through a
