The first French translation was written by French Jesuit Jean Joseph Marie Amiot in 1772. Also, a partial English translation was attempted by British officer Everard Ferguson Calthrop in 1905. Sun Tzu, also known as Sun Wu or Sunzi, was an ancient Chinese military strategist believed to be the author of the acclaimed military text, The Art of War. Details about Sun Tzu’s background and life are uncertain, although he is believed to have lived c. 544-496 BCE. Through The Art of War, Sun Tzu’s theories and strategies have influenced military leaders and campaigns throughout time, including the samurai of ancient and early-modern Japan, and more recently Ho Chi Minh of the Viet Cong and American generals Norman Swarzkopf, Jr. and Colin Powell during the Persian Gulf War in the 1990s.

    Sun Tzu (born 544 BCE- died 496 BCE), also known as Master Sun, Sun Wu (wu meaning military) or Sun Zi (zi meaning son) was a military general, a strategist and a philosopher during the Spring and Autumn civil war period of the Zhou Dynasty (1045 BCEto 256 BCE).

    The Art of War (Chinese: 孫子兵法; pinyin: Sūn zĭ bīng fǎ) is one of the most influential ancient Chinese books on military strategy.  An inscribed bamboo slip of The Art of War was unearthed in Yinque Mountain, Linyi, Shandong in 1972.  It was dated back to the 2nd century BCE.

    Sun Tzu's work has been praised and employed throughout the world in many Eastern and Western cultures, as well as many competitive endeavors, such as: politics, business, sports, and modern warfare.

    The book was first translated into French in 1772 by French Jesuit Jean Joseph Marie Amiot and a partial translation into English was attempted by British officer Everard Ferguson Calthrop in 1905.     故經之以五,校之以計,而索其情:一曰道,二曰天,三曰地,四曰將,五曰法。道者,令民于上同意者也,可與之死,可與之生,民不詭也。天者,陰陽、寒暑、時制也。地者,高下、遠近、險易、廣狹、死生也。將者,智、信、仁、勇、嚴也。法者,曲制、官道、主用也。凡此五者,將莫不聞,知之者勝,不知之者不勝。故校之以計,而索其情。曰:主孰有道?將孰有能?天地孰得?法令孰行?兵眾孰強?士卒孰練?賞罰孰明?吾以此知勝負矣。

    將聽吾計,用之必勝,留之﹔將不聽吾計,用之必敗,去之。

    計利以聽,乃為之勢,以佐其外。勢者,因利而制權也。

    Sunzi said: To you all who practice military strategies, please understand that... The Art of War has big significance to a Country.  It determines your life or death ground.  It determines your way to survive or be killed.  You must observe and be aware of all the changes around you to make the best strategic move.

    According to The Art of War, there are five key success factors (KSF) or principles governing your competitive strategies based on the schools of logical reasoning and intuitive thinking.  They are: (1) Ethics, (2) Heaven, (3) Earth, (4) Leadership, and (5) Law.
