The material covered in this publication is non exhaustive as an expose’ on the dangers of processed foods. It is intended to serve as a sobriquet to the folly of believing the media hype produced by the food industry. Those executives do not have the health of the consumer as its primary objective. Their primary objective is profit margin, which comes with the result of the good health of the consumer being forfeited. “I can’t see the forest because there are too many trees in the way” is an appropriate axiom in this case as this era that we currently live in as citizens of the USA coincides with extremely high rates of obesity, hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, joint issues, all of which are traced to dietary patterns. The prevalence of such issues currently is perceived by the masses as “normal”; otherwise, if public perception was cognizant of the link between health and diet, drastic changes in eating habits would ensue for those who have logic based will power. It seems that there are “too many trees in the way, preventing the average citizen to see the forest”. An old Oriental proverb states that “every trip begins with one step”. The point is that one shouldn’t be overwhelmed by the prevalence of processed foods. Rather, one should be enlightened to the fact that alternatives are readily available and usually more affordable (less expensive). Walk away from processed foods and walk toward natural foods and the ensuing trip will prove to be beneficial and healthy!

Processed Foods: What the Consumer Needs to Know

The ubiquitous (found nearly everywhere) entity known as processed foods is by far the most habitually consumed by citizens of the USA. The USA is a capitalistic (profit driven) nation as far as financial endeavors concerning most cases. Truth
concerning the nutritive value of food is left to corporate attorneys to define, within the parameters of their employer’s interests. These employers are the large corporations. By means of slick Madison Avenue media advertising which is constantly appealing to the masses via television, radio, world wide web, packaging, etc. . . . the masses are lulled into thinking that consuming primarily (for most meals) processed foods is normal. The logical question at this point is; just what is processed food? The answer is that processed food is offered to the public via canning, dehydration, aseptic processing, refrigeration, and boxing. The natural state of foods does not contain chemicals, preservatives, additional sugar, salt, flavor enhancers, or artificial colors. Processed foods are billed as very convenient, but that convenience comes at a cost. That cost is artificial color, stabilizers, emulsifiers, bleach, texturizer, software, preservatives, artificial sweeteners, to name just a few. To give one example on what should be a simple recipe; a strawberry milkshake bought in a restaurant typically contains the following ingredients: Amyl acetate, amyl butyrate, amyl vale rate, anethol, anisyl formate, benzyl acetate, benzyl isobutyrate, butyric acid, cinnamyl isobutyrate, cinnamylvalerate, cognac essential oil, diacetyl, dipropyl ketone, ethyl butyrate, ethyl cinnamate, ethyl heptanoate, ethyl lactate, ethyl methylphenylglycidate, ethyl Nitrate, ethyl propionate, ethyl valerbate, heliotropin, hydroxphrenyl-2butanone(10% solution to alcohol), a-ionone, isobutyl anthranilate, isobutyl butrate, lemon essential oil, maltol, 4-methylacetophenone, methyl anthranilate, methyl benzoate, methyl cinnamate, methyl heptine carbone, methyl naphthyl ketone, methyl slicylate, mint essential oil, neroli essential oil, nerolin, neryl isobulyrate, orris butter, phenethyl alcohol, sore rum ether, g-undecalctone, vanillin, and solvent. This is one example of the excessive use of chemicals and artificial ingredients found in what should be one simple food. Yet there are approximately 6000 chemicals regularly applied to processed foods in general.
Statistically, people who eat the most processed meat which includes hot dogs, bologna, the various package sandwich meats, processed sausage etc. . . Have a 67% higher risk of pancreatic cancer than those who ate little or no processed meats. Cancer risk is not the only danger in consuming processed foods. Obesity occurs because processed foods contain much sugar, fat, and salt. Processed foods are low in fiber and incline people toward weight gain via water retention due to excess salt and high fat content. Another danger of consuming excess processed food is heart disease. This occurs due to the high content of trans fatty acids which are dangerous and should be eliminated from anyone's diet. Transfatty acids give a rise to LDL which is the dangerous cholesterol and they lower the levels of HDL, which is the good cholesterol. Statistically, those who eliminate high – carbohydrate processed foods reduce the
