INTRODUCTION
If you're in the market to find a new job in 2015 - or you're looking to upgrade the job you already have - you should know that the employment opportunities today are better than they’ve been in years. 2014 was a solid year for job growth (the best since 1999), and the trend is only expected to accelerate in 2015 and beyond. The unemployment rate is below 6% (as of Jan 2015), consumer spending is on the rise, gas prices are down, and companies both large and small are expanding their operations and hiring new workers.
And these aren't just low-paying retail or service industry jobs being created in this revitalized economy. Just about every sector of the economy is experiencing strong job growth, including manufacturing, health care, construction, government, finance, transportation, mining, information services and more.
With more people working - and gas prices lower than they've been in years – family budgets rose in 2014, and consumer confidence rose right along with it. People are spending more as a result, which benefits the U.S. economy overall. Companies are expanding their operations, and are hiring more employees to keep up with strong consumer demand. Manufacturing jobs should show strong gains this year, the health care sector will see growth fueled by the Affordable Care Act, and stronger housing demand will drive gains in construction and finance.
This Should Be a Great Year for Job-Seekers
This obviously bodes well for unemployed workers, even those who’ve been out of work for 18 months or longer. College graduates are expected to benefit the most in 2015, along with workers who have specialized skills in this ever-changing digital economy. This should also be a good year for currently-employed individuals who are looking to change careers, or find a better-paying job in their current field.
The stronger job market should also drive up wages for most workers, as employers are forced to pay more to attract and retain good workers. Many employees - especially recent college grads with in-demand degrees - will be able to pick and choose from multiple job offers in high-paying industries. This sort of bidding war over workers is something that was almost unheard of just a few years ago, when companies were laying off more workers than they were hiring.
This strong job growth won't be evenly distributed across the U.S., however. Some areas of the country will offer greater employment opportunities than others. For example, the oil shale boom has created thousands of high-paying jobs in places like North Dakota, while the technology sector is booming in states like Washington, Texas and California. On the other hand, some regions of the country are still experiencing double-digit unemployment rates. So if you're not willing to pack up and re-locate to where the jobs are, you might find your job search more challenging (but certainly not impossible!)
Think of Yourself as a Free Agent
in Today’s Job Market
Job seekers and career changers today can't rely on the strategies that worked twenty, ten, or even five years ago. With the explosion of social media sites like Facebook and LinkedIn, and online career resources like Monster.com, today's job search looks very different than it did in 1999. A recent survey indicated more than half of new employees found their job through a social media connection rather than through a headhunter or employment agency. So the ability to network and connect with prospective employers is more important than ever.
It's also important to think of yourself as a free agent
these days, and develop a personal marketing plan that will get you the most exposure, and help you stand out from the competition in today's inter-connected job market. This means more than just having a great resume and cover letter, but also knowing how to get your resume in front of the right people, and landing those all-important interviews where you can sell yourself to the people who make the hiring decisions at your target employer.
How to Use This Book
I’ve organized this book into twelve sections. Each section covers a different strategy for finding a good-paying job in today’s competitive and ever-changing job market. You’ll learn things like how to create a job search action plan, and how to start building a personal brand that will set you apart from your competitors. There’s a section on resume writing, and how to prepare for a job interview. You’ll learn a variety of online job-search techniques as well, and how to use the top employment websites and blogs. I’ve also covered the top three social media platforms for job-seekers, and I’ve added some ideas for offline job searching as well.
You can read this book from cover-t0-cover, or pick out specific chapters that apply to your current situation. You may already be familiar with some of these strategies like how to use Facebook for a job search, but others may be new to you. I’ve attempted to provide as many useful tips as possible within each strategy, so you can learn quickly and apply that knowledge to your job search going forward.
Whatever your approach, just know that this should be a very good year for the US labor market, and your chances of finding a good-paying job are better than they’ve been since 2008. My intention in writing this book is to help as many people as possible take advantage of these opportunities, and hopefully find work that’s both stimulating, and financially rewarding. Those jobs are out there. All you have to do is decide what you want out of a new job, create a solid plan, and then work that plan every day, with confidence. If you do those things, and you’re persistent, then I have no doubt that you’ll be successful in your endeavor.
Best of luck to you and THANK YOU for letting me be a part of your quest to find that exciting new job in 2015!
To your success,
Don Allen
STRATEGY #1: DEVELOP A JOB SEARCH ACTION PLAN
If you're serious about finding a great job in 2015, you'll need to have an action plan to take you from where you are now, to where you want to be. The job outlook is moving in a positive direction this year, but that doesn't mean you won't have to work hard and be determined when searching for a good-paying job in the field of your choice. There's still a lot of competition out there, and will only increase as more long-term unemployed workers re-enter the labor force now that hiring has accelerated.
Your first course of action should be to develop a comprehensive job-search plan that covers all the bases, and will put
