Introduction
The process of losing weight can seem like an insurmountable task that many people abandon long before taking the first step in a weight loss program. If you are reading this and are concerned about losing weight, take solace in the fact that you are not alone. In the United States it is estimated that greater than 60% of the population is overweight. Furthermore, greater than 30% are considered obese and likely to face grave health issues as a result. People are struggling with their weight more now than in any other time in history, but the path to weight loss needn’t be a difficult one paved with self-denial.
Who this book is for
This book is for anyone who is looking to lose weight. You might be someone looking to lose that last stubborn 10 pounds or you may be someone who is looking to start on your 100+ pound weight loss journey. The truth is, the modern world is conspiring against us to keep us sedentary and overweight. Most of us spend our days of work or leisure in front of a computer or commuting while sitting on our backsides. The fact that anyone today can manage to be normal weight
is quite frankly a miracle.
If you are someone who has the luxury of belonging to a gym or participating in cardio kickboxing classes, that’s even better! Congratulations, as physical exercise is one of the best ways to lose weight. Unfortunately, in today’s hectic life, exercise programs can be a time and finance commitment that many people simply cannot afford. Ironically, as the workforce has changed from manual work to more sedentary labor, costs of living have also risen requiring people to work longer hours, keeping many of us from indulging in physical exercise. This book is for those people too, offering an alternative to arduous workout programs.
What this book is not
While this book contains suggestions and strategies about the way you eat, this is not a diet book. Diet books typically come in two flavors: books that advocate the types of foods to eat to live a healthy lifestyle, and books that contain an eating strategy devised to help you lose weight. The latter type of books I classify as the typical fad diet
, which while sometimes successful more often than not end in frustration for the dieter.
There is no shortage of fad diet plans out there that market to every niche and claim their own success with helping people lose weight. You’ve certainly heard the claims – lose X
amount of weight in a certain timeframe, cleanse your body of fat, etc. The problem is that many times these diets are usually an exercise in self-deprivation that have very poor long term success rates. Some of the more popular fad diets also recommend avoiding certain nutrients that are necessary for your good long term health.
Nor is this a book outlining a specific physical fitness regime. True, exercise is one of the best ways to lose weight. But jumping right into a physical fitness plan can also be a frustrating experience. Commercial gyms have a long list of clients that sign up for memberships only to stop exercising after one or two months. Exercise can be a difficult discipline to start and maintain. Starting down this path solely for the purpose of weight loss can be a frustrating task and can be difficult to maintain. An active lifestyle is best started as a lifestyle change, and this book advocates exactly that.
What this book is
There are easy, fundamental changes we can make in the way we behave every day that can help us subtly curve the amount of calories we are consuming, or increase the amount of calories we are burning. Consider this: in order to lose one pound of body weight a week a person must create a caloric
