    Calum’s Justice

Calum put his pistol into his belt and checked his pouch to make sure he had dry powder and shot; then he nodded to John and walked out of the camp.

John cradled Magdalene against his shoulder and watched him go. The man who’d killed her little brother was going to die, he had no doubt about that. He just hoped his friend’s anger didn’t get him killed too.

He would be back at his trading post, this storekeeper who butchered little children. Calum walked down the trail that was still littered with the bloody corpses of the trappers who thought they were going to get rich. Instead they just got dead.

He reached the top of the steep hill leading down to the trading post and stopped. It was a little past two in the morning, but the moon was full and lit the buildings and the clearing with a flat pale light.

The place appeared to be deserted, but he knew it wasn’t. The storekeeper wouldn’t run away and leave his wares unguarded for any passing thief to have. He was not the type. No, he would be waiting. Armed. He would try to murder him from hiding.

    So be it.

Calum walked down the long hill, in the middle of the widening trail. Illuminated by the moonlight. Suicidally stupid.

He walked through the gap in the thorn fence and into the clearing in front of the store. Forty yards. A marksman could make that shot. But not at night, even in moonlight. And it would give away his position, in whatever hole he was hiding. He would wait.

Calum glanced up to his right. The night clouds were rolling slowly towards the moon. A minute, m’be two. He searched the darkness around the store, the barn, the corral where the settler’s wagon stood in the far corner, its canvas tied shut for the night. There was no movement anywhere, except the sound of shuffling hooves from the mules in the corral. They were at ease, so there was no hidden assassin near them. The barn doors were wide open with its interior ink-black against the brightly lit sand. A man could be standing three feet from the entrance and be completely hidden. He watched the gaping black hole for a second, then let it go. He couldn’t double-guess himself. What would happen would happen in its own time. There was always a rhythm to such things. And it was too soon yet. Ambushers would be steeling themselves. Waiting for a certain kill. Knowing that to move too early would turn the murder into a fight, and
