Synopsis: The widow of a clergyman heads off to be a mail order bride to a Civil War vet with PTSD. She knows he’s troubled about the war and soon, she is drawn into his terrors; all of which appear to be focused on a tornado.
Belinda raced to grab her husband from the horde of riders coming across the sky. He was directly in their path and only she could save him before they both awoke from the nightmare.
She made her landfall in New York City thirty years after the end of the War Between the States. She had traveled with her husband Harrison from Derbyshire after his ordination to the Methodist ministry. Her husband had been assigned a circuit along the eastern seaboard of the United States by the general conference and reported directly to his bishop.
But his health had grown weak with the constant bad weather and he was forced to endure traveling around from one church to the next. Six months after his arrival, he passed away from consumption. His funeral was attended by all the clergy in the area and the churches he served all contributed to help his wife Belinda, who was now a widow.
She grew tired of having to wait around the former parsonages looking for work or any way to assist the new ministers who were being sent in to fulfill the space left by her former husband. There wasn’t much for the wife of a deceased clergyman to do, forcing her to take any job she could find. This included being a governess to the children of a wealthy businessman and teaching school. None of the career choices she made proved fulfilling to her.
It wasn’t until she was reading a newspaper distributed in the frontier that she had an inkling of what direction she should take. Belinda was leafing through the pages when she came to the matrimonial section. There, she found countless ads of men in the western states who were desirous of wives. From what she had heard, few women wanted to endure the hardships of a life on the prairies and frontier. She began reading the matrimonial section on a regular basis to see if there were any possibilities for her.
Finally, she located one that proved promising. A rancher near Topeka, Kansas was in search of a wife to come and live on his tract. He promised a large farmhouse, barn, and plenty of land to ensure she would be marrying into a family with good long term potentials. He also wanted a God-fearing woman who was not troubled by the Devil and all his designs.
The last advertisement was of great interest to her as her former husband had been the Godliest man she had ever known. So, God-fearing he was that Belinda was still untouched by the marriage bed.
She composed a letter to Mr. Thomas Barksdale detailing her education, her refinement, and her marriage to a circuit rider who had been called to Glory too early. The rancher was impressed and sent her a letter in return with a picture of him standing on his land in Kansas.
Belinda was impressed and spent the money to send him a picture in her best Sunday dress.
Weeks passed and there was no word from the rancher. Finally one day, a letter arrived in the post addressed with a very masculine hand. Belinda
