(John 15:5)
"I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing."
Charles and Loretta White were on cloud nine, living in beautiful Paducah, Kentucky. They’d been childhood friends, gone all the way through school together and finally marrying in 1891. They had big plans and a bright future in missionary work.
They both had been sent to camps nearly every year as they grew up together and had the taste of spreading the gospel on their lips, leaving them saturated with desires to expand God’s kingdom. With the experience of preaching and teaching, they had decided to wait to have their own children, until after they had built an orphanage for children in need of homes and learning about Jesus Christ.
After a small wedding took place with only friends and family, the two of them were on their way to accomplishing their goals. In the later months of 1893, they succeeded in building the first orphanage in Paducah. This would be a place where orphaned children could live out their lives under protection and the guidance of Christian teachers.
In the 1800’s there were always enough children that were left behind when their parents had died from illnesses, hurt in farm accidents or even occasional attacks from Natives. Therefore, there was never a problem with finding children. Their plan was to take them from surrounding counties and even venturing out further as time would allow it.
Charles put hard work into designing the building, making it not only a dorm type setting, but it would include a church as well as a clinic inside the building. He had enough finances because of the money that his parents had left him, and together with the money that his wife, Loretta inherited; they had plenty to bring the project to fruition.
What Charles lacked was the manpower to help him build the orphanage. Nevertheless, before long, he was able to find plenty of volunteers for the job and they began at once building their dream. Charles and Loretta lived in a small cabin that could be seen behind the building, and they both were surrounded by landscapes of pine trees.
It was a beautiful spot and come spring or winter, the land would be sure to be breathtaking. It took them a full two years to finish the orphanage even with several volunteers helping them, but when they were done, they were well pleased. Standing back and looking at their finished project, they lacked one thing, the sign to hang over the home and business.
Loretta had no idea that her husband had already made a sign to put in its place, and it read simply, ‘Loretta’s’.
As the workers all stood admiring all the work they’d done, Charles excused himself, was gone for a time, and then he returned holding a
