About this ebook
In a close call, while installing gutters on a summerhouse in Houghs Neck, Andy Roberts nearly falls off the roof. Upon meeting its occupant, Robin Peters, however, nothing can prevent him from falling for her. Social class differences and parental disapproval serve only to strengthen their bonds of love.

Robin Peters was getting into her convertible when she glanced up and saw a pair of tanned, muscular legs dangling over the side of the summerhouse. Excuse me, miss, but do you think you might be able to upright that ladder?
The request came from a young man in denim shorts and a white T-shirt, clinging precariously to the gutter above her. It's heavy; so be careful,
he warned. But I sure would appreciate it if you'd give it a try.
Oh, my heavens,
the willowy blond with the blue eyes and ruby lips exclaimed, running to it.
That won't be necessary, Robin,
a voice from within the screened porch of the rambling summerhouse, the Gull's Way, declared. Soon Reggie Hudson, a short, stocky young man with a face like a pit bull and the personality to match came into view. Holding firmly on to his arm as if fearing that at any moment he might flee from her grasp was Wendy Abbot, a plumpish brunette, with dark, darting eyes and a smile she turned on and off like a water faucet. You know what I think?
he said, looking up at him with a smirk.
Robin, who was struggling with the ladder, glared at him. Don't just stand there,
she demanded, help me get this darn thing up.
That sounds like an excellent idea,
the dangler said calmly.
Obviously in no hurry to lend a helping hand, Reggie declared, I think you pushed it over on purpose so you could catch Robin's eye.
Despite his perilous predicament, he kept his sense of humor. I assure you I know a hundred less dangerous ways to get a beautiful woman's attention.
When you went out for a jog this morning, Robin, he was more interested in gawking at you than in replacing the gutters,
Reggie said through clenched teeth. I've got a good mind to--
He stopped in mid-sentence; for, she was too busy trying to lift the ladder to pay any attention to his conjecture or, for that matter, the other fellow's compliment.. Oh, give me that,
he growled, snatching it from her hands and throwing it roughly against the side of the house.
Searchingly, the feet of the young man, hanging above them, found the top rung. Whew, that was a close call!
he exclaimed, slithering down to the ground and turning to Robin. If you hadn't come along, I'm afraid I would've made a big hole in the driveway.
Oh, my father wouldn't have liked that,
she replied good-naturedly.
With an infectious smile, he extended his hand. I'm Andy Roberts.
Tingling at the warmth of his clasp, she replied, I'm--
Robin Peters,
he interrupted, tightening his grip and widening his smile. We met last year at the town clambake. You probably don't remember me?
Yes, of course,
she lied, without making any effort to retrieve her hand. With his thatch of sandy hair, twinkling brown eyes, and bronzed torso, she wondered how she could have failed to remember him.
Patty Perkins introduced us.
She winced at the name, recalling how her father had forbidden her to chum around with the redhead, who, at one time, had been her closest friend in Houghs Neck. Tall and ungainly, Patty was that rare person with whom she could enjoy a laugh or share an intimate secret. Mr. Peters, who had watched their growing friendship with displeasure, eventually moved in and broke it up. Strange as it may seem, he harbored no ill will toward her; on the contrary, he admired her openness and lack of pretense.
