Amish Country Tours 2 - Rachel Stoltzfus

    1

    Saturday, April 4

As Miriam and the kinner start tending to their afternoon chores, talking excitedly about the new bunnies, Sarah and I stand out behind the barn talking for a moment.

John, did you buy all of this wood just to build us a rabbit hutch? she asks curiously.

Don’t you worry; the wood and supplies I brought are all just leftovers from projects at my place. I’m not even sure if they’ll be enough to finish the project. I need to get an idea of where you’d like it built and then I’ll draw up a plan and calculate how much we’ll need to be sure. I figured I would design it today and try to get it built on Tuesday. Maybe the boys could even help after they get home from school.

"That would be wonderful, the boys will be thrilled to help and there’s ne school next week, it’s their spring break. We’ll make a whole day of it! We’ll call it a ‘rabbitat frolic,’ you men can build the hutch and we’ll make lunch and cook that fish you brought us for dinner. That way the girls can help too," she chuckles.

A rabbitat frolic, I like that, I smile.

She shows me to the spot where she’d like the hutch built. "I think this is a gut spot. It’ll be close to the barn and the chicken coop with room for people to gather around without trampling my garden."

That makes sense; I’ll have Mark help me move the supplies from the wagon into the barn. Will I be in the way if I work on the plans while you’re cooking this afternoon?

"Och, ne. I’ll find a notebook and pencil for you, just come on inside when you’re ready," she smiles.

As we walk back toward the house a shiny red car pulls down the drive, stopping in front of us. A blonde-haired woman wearing big sunglasses pokes her head out of the driver’s window, I hope I’m in the right place, are you Ms. Fisher? she asks.

"Ya, I’m Sarah Fisher," Sarah says looking over at me a little nervously.

The woman gets out of the car, Hi there, my name’s Melissa Callan, my brother and his family were visiting last week and took a tour of your farm? Well the whole family just raved about it and my kids and I were wondering if we could take the tour too. I know tomorrow’s Easter but we drove thirty miles to see it, she smiles. He said the tour was fifty dollars plus whatever else we buy. I would like so much for my kids to see a real farm.

"I’d be happy to give you a tour Mrs. Callan. Would you mind waiting just a few minutes? My kinner are just finishing up their chores."

Would you mind if we got out and stretched our legs while we wait? she asks.

"Ya go ahead," Sarah tells her.

"I’ll let the kinner know," I tell her as I head back to the barn.

Are those people here for a tour? Mark asks curiously.

I chuckle, "Ya, they’re waiting for you to finish your chores."

I’m finished with mine, I’ll hitch up the buggy, he informs me. You could come with us this time; maybe you’ll have some new ideas.

"That sounds like a gut idea," I smile.

I walk around to the chicken coop and let Miriam know that the Englischers are here, before joining Sarah out front. Apparently the Englisch woman is a single mamm of three and she’s admiring Sarah’s ability to manage five kinner on her own.

Mark is getting the buggy ready, Miriam and the girls will be right out.

This is such a beautiful place, my sister-in-law said it reminded her of a pretty postcard and she was right, the Englisch woman says looking around. I just don’t know how you do all of this; five children, canning and baking too. I just fell in love with your apple butter! You don’t happen to have any more for sale do you?

I think I have a few more jars. I also have some pear honey made from the pears we grow and homemade banana bread if you’re interested in either of those.

I’m impressed with her salesmanship for being so new to the whole tour idea.

I’m watching my carbs, but the pear honey sounds delicious. I’ll take another dozen eggs, a jar of pear honey and two jars of apple butter if you have it.

By the time she finishes conveying her order, the kinner have all gathered around. "I’ll get everything ready for you while you take the tour. These are my kinner," Sarah says, pointing out each of the children and introducing them by name.

My goodness they’re adorable, the English woman marvels, This is Trevor, Marcus and Taylor; and I’m Melissa, she says to the kinner.

I’ll help Mark give the tour while you get their order ready, I assure Sarah, sensing her nervousness.

First we’ll go for a buggy ride and then you can pet the animals, Mark informs the Englisch woman.

And we have some brand new bunnies too, Josh adds excitedly.

The Englisch children are all excited to hear about that.

Follow me, Samuel says, leading them to the buggy.

Mark helps everyone inside as I climb in and take the reins.

The whole tour from start to finish lasts approximately an hour and the Englisch woman pays us sixty-five dollars, including the cost of the extra items she purchased. I realize that her brother had given her the price, which was probably generously based on the fact that they showed up without being invited. But it reminds me that I need to figure out what to charge in the future. For now, I’m just grateful for the blessing.

John and Mark stay behind to unload the supplies from the wagon as mamm and the kinner all come inside with me. Okay, show me your hands if your room is clean and your afternoon chores are finished, I say to the four of them.

They all raise their hands and I go over the chore chart with them before assigning them a few enjoyable tasks. Mary, would you and Hannah find a nice bunny or two that you can trace in one of the coloring books? You’ll need to trace enough of them so that you can color one to look like each bunny with the bunny’s name on it so we can have them for the tours.

You mean like they have at the zoo where it tells about the animals?

"Ya very gut, I think the Englisch children would like to know the name of the bunnies they pet."

We could hang them on a sign and decorate it too! she says excitedly.

"Can Samuel and I do some for the horses, mamm?" Josh asks.

I don’t like to color, you can make them Josh, Samuel tells him. "I want to see if I can teach Joker any more tricks, can I mamm?"

    "Ya go ahead," I chuckle.

I want to go with you, Josh pleads.

It’s okay Josh, we’ll make the pictures of the horses too, Mary assures him.

The girls start getting out their coloring supplies and both boys take off for the barn as John and Mark return.

Leave some room for John at the table girls, he’s going to design your rabbitat, I chuckle.

What’s a rabbitat John? Mark asks.

"It’s a word your mamm invented for rabbit-habitat, he laughs, Pretty catchy isn’t it?"

"That’s so silly mamm," Hannah decides.

Ooooh I want to help, Mark smiles excitedly.

"I’m glad because I’m going to need some gut strong men on Tuesday when we build it, John tells him, We’re going to have a whole rabbitat frolic day and since you’re the oldest, you’re going to be my right-hand man."

I won’t let you down, he assures him, You already showed me how to use the hammer, I could probably even hammer all of the nails for you, he smiles enthusiastically.

Well before you build anything, you should always have a plan with all of your measurements written down. As we work out the plan, you’ll have the important task of managing our supply list. There’s nothing worse than being in the middle of a job and finding out you don’t have enough materials, John explains.

"I’m really gut at planning. You can tell me anything you need me to write down," Mark informs him, while getting some paper and pencil.

I look over at my mamm who hasn’t even started to chop the onions in front of her, but I can tell that her eyes are already starting to water. I can’t say that I blame her; it’s touching to see John work with Mark and the way he just soaks up the male attention.

As everyone goes about working on their various projects, I make the cornbread batter for the stuffing. I put the first two large pans in to bake and realize what a blessing it will be to have more oven space since I’ll probably need four pans of cornbread to make enough stuffing for the holiday weekend.

As soon as the last two pans of cornbread are in the oven, John carries the ham over to the Daadi Haus to put in mamm’s oven to bake before he and Mark see what other materials they can round up from Jacob’s woodshop. Mamm rolls out her pie crusts and I make a pea salad for Monday; minus the eggs that I’ll add after the kinner hunt them tomorrow.

After they’ve finished their bunny tracings and coloring the horses, Mary and Hannah take their coloring pages out to the barn so that they can color each bunny more accurately.

Mamm chuckles, "John sure made the kinner happy today she smiles, pinching the edges of her pie dough around the pan. It’s easy to see God’s hand in all of this."

Ruth said the same thing. I have to admit that whatever fears I may have been hanging onto about making the right decision sure disappeared when he showed up with those rabbits and the supplies for the hutch, I chuckle. Now I’m just excited to watch it all come together.

Mamm puts all four pies in the oven just as someone knocks on the front door.

I’ll get it, mamm says as I put the kettle on for coffee. I peek out the screen door and recognize Deacon Byler’s buggy parked in front of the house. I step into the living room where they’re standing near the door. Happy Easter Deacon Byler, may I offer you a cup of coffee?

I came to speak to you about a serious matter Sarah Fisher, he says in a gruff voice, "I hear you’re giving tours of your farm to Englischers," he says in an accusatory tone with a red face.

Well ya but we only gave them a buggy ride around the property and let them pet the animals, it’s harmless I assure you.

"That’s what you say now but soon you will have Englischers all over our community, disrupting our lives, going wherever they please and taking pictures everywhere we go. I’ll not have it and I’ll be talking to the bishop about this."

"I’m sorry you feel that way, I meant ne-,"

    "Gut day Sarah Fisher,"
