Chapter One: Introduction
My Brother Sam Is Dead
by James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier was first published in 1974. There is a highly realistic description of the events which occurred in the American Revolution.
The book was named an ALA Notable Children’s Book. It was also nominated for a National Book Award in 1975. Between 1900 to 2000 the book remained one of the most frequently challenged works of fiction.
The author had particularly written this novel to recreate a particular moment in the Civil War. The story has been presented from a child’s viewpoint. However, the book is sometimes offensive.
The story deals with several social issues, however, it prominently questions the usefulness of war as an answer to social problems. At the end of the novel, the protagonist asks whether such a country could be created from an end other than war.
My Brother Sam is Dead
very intelligently and precisely shows the repercussions of war on a singly involved family. The story also shows how several other people are affected. There is no anti-war message in the story. It also gives the details of the maturation of a boy who really admires and idolizes his older brother.
Several of the characters in the novel have been taken from history. In the epilogue, the authors explain how they have tried to recreate the effects of war on Tory family.
Chapter Two: Plot Overview
Tim Meeker is the narrator of the novel. Sam Meeker is his brother. As the story begins, Sam Meeker comes back home from college in the spring of 1775. He discloses that he has decided to get enlisted in the Rebel army.
His parents are obviously appalled. However, his younger brother Tim Meeker is surprised but he has admiration for his elder brother.
When Sam and Tim are outside the house together doing their work around their family’s tavern, Sam tells Tim about his plan to steal his father’s gun that he will use to fight. Tim does not agree and he protests, but he can’t do anything to stop Sam.
Later that night, there is an argument between Sam and Mr.
