About this ebook

Clan: Season 2, Episode 8. Calum’s Trade

A Bitesize 1-hour Read.

The French army is advancing from Fort Saint Frederic and the British army marching to engage them from New York and Boston.

Calum Maclean has sworn to find Magdalene’s little brother, and no war is going to make him break his word.

Colonel Dutronc is right on his tail and is determined to kill Calum. He has 500 troops under his command to make it happen.

The race is on to get to rescue Robbie from the fur trader who bought him, as if he was a piece of meat, before Dutronc, the whole French army, or the English finally hang our hero!

In a strange country, on a far off continent, where his skills are tested to breaking point at every turn, Calum knows that the smallest mistake, the slightest miscalculation and his friends will be dead.

He has never faced a greater challenge.

    Calum’s Trade

Calum put his hand on the hilt of his dirk and looked up slowly, past the mass of white-tipped brown fur that filled his horizon. The thing that was making the harsh breathing noises towered above him, blocking out the sky.

He stepped back very slowly without taking his eyes off the thing. He took one more step and could see the whole animal. He’d seen bears many times, but not like this. This one was enormous, huge, gigantic. Easily weighing a thousand pounds, the dark brown monster was on its hind legs and stood a good three feet taller than him. He knew it was a grizzly. Nothing else could match the sheer size of the beast.

He released his dirk. He could stab the bear from now until Christmas and do nothing but irritate it, and irritating it was the last thing he wanted to do.

He could run. He thought about that. This grizzly could outpace him by thirty miles an hour. So no running. Climb a tree? Two things struck him immediately about that plan: no trees tall enough to stop it just reaching up and pulling him right back down, and he’d never make it anyway before the bear stepped forward and broke him in half with the gigantic paws it was presently displaying at its shoulders.

So no climbing trees, no running away, and definitely no stabbing. I donna suppose you want to sit down for a wee breakfast? Calum said with a smile. Then realized how insane that was.

The bear made a noise deep in its throat like distant thunder.

Aye, Calum said, that’s what I thought.

He turned his head an inch at a time and looked back through the trees across the narrow strip of clear earth. The Indian raiders were still advancing on the camp, more slowly now they were almost on it. If he didn’t do something soon, they’d catch John and Magdalene asleep and it would be over in an agonizing instant.

He looked up at the bear. Its eyes were dark pits in its fur. He guessed that even if he could see them, they’d not give away his intentions as a human’s would. He took another slow step back. The bear didn’t move. Calum knew only too well the simple truth that any animal with four legs was going to be faster than him, and this one could accelerate faster than most four-legged animals. Outrunning this bear was never going to happen.

Then a suicidal idea popped into his mind. He didn’t have to outrun the bear, well, not for long, just for the width of the clearing. Ten feet at the most. He took another slow step.

The bear lowered its head a fraction, then lifted it again quickly at some sound in the trees.

    Calum bolted.

The bear recovered fast from its distraction, dropped down onto all fours and took off as fast as a racehorse.

Calum wasn’t going to make more
