Author

Donna V.

Raised in South Florida and presently residing on the island of Hawai'i, Donna was a former university professor and fashion designer. It was her extensive travel which began at a very young age that created an intense interest in multi-national culture, eventually leading to a Master of International Business Administration (MIBA) degree - providing the entry to a career as a professor of international business. Donna's belief that we are all here on this beautiful planet to experience life lessons and be of assistance to others as they travel their "spiritual road" through life led her to become a successful author. She has completed the first part of her commitment to the Divine to do his work in our world today with the six-book series, "Mind, Body, and Spirit." The second half of that promise is sure to include both private and public speaking engagements and continued international travel. In the future, Donna looks forward to enjoying her well-established active outdoor lifestyle featuring "open water" swimming and outrigger canoe paddling. Her path has been an exciting and very fulfilling one and she plans to keep generously sharing her "gifts" with others as long as she lives. As Donna says, "This is a guarantee..."

    A Blessing

    ––––––––

There is a blessing that comes to everyone who visits our island.

You can feel it emanate from the lava rocks on a warm afternoon. It is there in the beauty of our flowers and trees and the songs of our birds. It is a part of our glorious nightly sunset and the celebration of a luau.

It announces itself with the blowing of the conch and the drums of our dance—in the gentle sway of our palm trees and the graceful movement of our hula. In the full moon storytelling and the proud faces of our venders on market day. It is the satisfaction of our artists and writers and shows itself in the work of our local residents as they take the time to offer a heartfelt greeting and make you feel at home.

It showers you like a misty rain in the high regions and dries you like a fun day at the beach filled with joy and laughter.

You find it in the playfulness of the whales just offshore during winter and the vast array of colorful fish surrounding our reefs.

It is the concern of our pilots and captains who daily tour others around their island and discuss favorite spots and activities.

It is our gift to you. One that I hope will find a special place in your heart. A place that is as special as our Hawai’i Island.

    About the Cover

    ––––––––

I believe that wild animals are messengers from the Divine whether they arrive by air, sea, or land.

Twice in my life I have been visited by a spotted eagle ray. The first was while on vacation in Grand Cayman as I was swimming in the deep ocean behind our hotel. I saw a large shadow underneath me and realized it was a ray accompanying me on my morning exercise.

My second encounter was just as this book went to the printer, in October 2013. I was on my way to yoga class at the Marriott Hotel. As I passed by the King’s pond I saw a large, black shape moving in the clear, shallow water. When I approached the pond to get a better look, the shape swam toward me in one quick, fluid movement. I knew immediately that it was an eagle ray.

I now realize that the Divine provided my first sighting in order to tell me that I needed to start becoming less serious and begin going with the flow. The second one was to congratulate me on finally learning this lesson and weaving it into my life.

I hope you enjoy the aquatic animal messenger I have chosen for the cover of this book and understand the meaning behind it. Allow the picture of this beautiful spotted eagle ray to always remind you to go with the flow. The flow of the island of Hawai’i. The flow of "aloha."

    Preface

    ––––––––

The book which you are about to enjoy represents the highlights of my first eighteen months in Hawai’i. It all started with a list of five goals for 2012 which were:

    ––––––––

    Friendship

    Joy

    Independence

    Pride and Leadership

    Balance

    ––––––––

These goals took on a life of their own through Divine intervention and became, Aloha.

I have written this book as a present to the people who have been chosen to follow behind me in order to begin life anew in the beautiful state of Hawai’i as well as to others who arrive daily as visitors with a curiosity to know more about the dynamics of this special place in the world. I offer my guide, filled with personal experiences and amazing stories, to everyone with aloha.

The following poem was written by Auntie Pilahi Paki. She was a teacher, community leader, and considered a living treasure in Hawai’i. Let her memory live on through her words...

    Meaning of Aloha

    ––––––––

A – Akahai (aka-hi)-meaning kindness, to be expressed with a feeling of tenderness; grace

    ––––––––

L – Lokahi (low-ka-he)-meaning unity, to be expressed with harmony; of one mind - ke akua, connected and unbroken

    ––––––––

O – ‘Olu’olu (‘o-lou-‘o-lou)-meaning agreeable, to be expressed with pleasantness; gentle

    ––––––––

H – Ha’aha’a (hah’-a-hah’-a)-meaning humility, to be expressed with modesty; be empty

    ––––––––

A – Ahonui (ah-ho-noo-e)-meaning patience, to be expressed with perseverance; waiting for the moment, be prepared

    Pele

    ––––––––

Pele is our Goddess and she is the one that runs the island of Hawai’i. There have been books written about her legend and stories abound of how she saved our islanders in times of peril. There is one thing, however, that you will not find included in any book but this one. That is an explanation of the lessons Pele requires everyone complete in order to reside on our beautiful tropical island in the Pacific Ocean.

The lessons of aloha are not easy or painless. They are emotional and consume your entire existence here. But, when you have successfully finished them you will be like my Canadian friend, Donna, who ran down the middle of the street with her arms outstretched yelling, I LOVE THIS PLACE. I LOVE HAWAI’I.

    ––––––––

Whether you have been called here recently for relocation or have lived here for many years, the lessons are the same. Class starts upon arrival and ends when each of the five points in the "Aloha" poem, on the preceding page, have been integrated at a soul level.

The chance to start over again in Hawai’i is a rare gift not to be taken lightly. To walk away from the known into the unknown takes courage and faith and this journey back to wholeness isn’t possible for everyone.

There are no shortcuts. This is a spiritual island and our Goddess intends to keep it that way as long as she is in charge.

The abundance here originates in the intense beauty and purity of our island and our unconditional love for one another. This is not something that can be spent freely or horded like cash. It must be savored on a daily basis and allowed to grow, touching everyone with its magic, the magic of aloha...

    First Impressions

    Chapter 1

    ––––––––

I have found that the best way to begin anything: new job, new friendship, or new life is to picture a blank, black canvas. When one expects nothing, then everything is a wonderful surprise. Imitate a three-year old child and begin every day as a fantastic adventure, a never ending thrill. It is unnecessary to advise a child to relax and have fun. They know this innately.

    ––––––––

This morning, early, I received a call from my brother saying, I have some time today to come over and look at your broken blind and the sink with the drip. I will be there in thirty minutes. Not only did he
