    CHAPTER 1

    ––––––––

Arianna Haughton grabbed her purse from the passenger seat and hurriedly rummaged through it. When her hand finally landed on the loudly buzzing cellphone, she jabbed the talk button. Hello, this is Arianna.

Hi, Arianna. This is Vanessa Webster. The older woman paused for only a moment. I just wanted to let you know that I've found a renter for the apartment in your duplex.

As she sped down the highway, Arianna smiled. Great news, Vanessa. You can't imagine just how happy I am to hear you say those words. She paused for a second to change lanes. What's her name?

Ashley Davis. The silver haired woman saved the changes to Arianna's account on her computer. Ashley is coming into the office tomorrow to finalize everything. I'll be out of town for the rest of the week, but one of the other realtors here will make sure she signs the paperwork and gets the key.

Arianna took the exit that led to Columbia Metro Airport. Oh, okay. Understood. I won't be back into South Carolina until next week, either. In fact, I'm on my way to the airport as we speak...I have a design conference in New York. She frowned. Boss says that it's mandatory.

Well, when you get back, your new tenant should be in the apartment.

As Arianna disconnected the call, she smiled. At least that was one less thing she had to deal with. She was happy that she'd taken her friend's advice and gone through a rental agency to lease out the other half of her home—she honestly hadn't wanted to deal with the hassle herself.

She smiled when she thought about her new home—it was relatively large, and in a very desirable neighborhood of downtown Columbia, SC. When her realtor had shown her the revitalized Colonial three months ago, she'd been pleased to discover that it had recently been converted to a duplex. Having a tenant to share her mortgage payment would go a long ways towards helping her to grow her savings account—which was already quite sizable, considering that she was only twenty-five years old and had earned all the money on her own.

Then she frowned. She had all the trappings of a modern, successful, young Black woman—great home, nice car, fabulous friends, and now an amazing job—but she didn't have a guy in her life to share it all with. In her estimation, that was the only thing that was missing from her living a fairy tale existence. Then she thought about her ex-fiancee, Oliver, and their broken engagement. She shook her head. Maybe she didn't need a man in her life. She laughed humorlessly to herself. Maybe she should get a dog instead for companionship and call it a day. She smiled at that prospect. A cute little chihuahua or teacup poodle would be perfect. Her pet would give her unconditional love, and never disappoint. Yes, she would definitely look into doing that—getting a pet that is.

Arianna shimmied her well-toned body into the thigh length band-aid style dress. She smiled at her reflection in the floor length mirror. She turned to get a look at herself from a different angle, admiring her glowing caramel-colored skin, C cup breasts, and round rear-end. Her butt and skin color were definitely from her African-American father's side of the family. Her long straight nose and deep-set brown eyes that twinkled were definitely the result of her mother's Italian heritage. She knew she looked hot.

She took a seat on the hotel bed and transferred items from her day-to-day purse into her sleek clutch. She shook her head. She had half a mind to step out of the dress, scrub her face, and tell her friend Lucy, from her college days at SC State, that she wouldn't be going out with her tonight.

That night was her final one in New York City. The last seminar of her conference had been delivered earlier in the day, and she would be flying back home to Columbia on tomorrow.

A visual montage of her college escapades with Lucy flitted quickly through her mind. She knew Lucy was fond of doing things that were outrageous, so she didn't know what to expect of going out with the fiery redhead—especially in her hometown. All Lucy had told her was to wear something sexy. She smoothed her hands down over the skin tight dress. She knew this dress would fit the bill.

Arianna took a quick look at the clock on the wall. Ten twenty-four it read. She stood from the bed. It was time to make her way downstairs and meet Lucy in the lobby.

Lucy ran up to her and pulled her in a hug as soon as she stepped off of the elevator. There you are Arianna. I haven't seen you in two years, but you look exactly the same.
