Introduction
Sihanoukville is a fairly young town, having been founded in 1960 by the then Prince, Norodom Sihanouk. It is the capital of Sihanoukville province, and is in the south-west of Cambodia at the Gulf of Thailand. Sihanoukville is 100km from Kampot, 226km from Phnom Penh, and 653Km from Bangkok. Sihanoukville is Cambodia’s biggest sea port, and handles all international trade. Sihanoukville also boasts some of the best beaches in Cambodia.
Construction began in 1955 due to the Vietnamese restricting access to the Mekong Delta and for the need to expand the size of the sea port in Kampot. Sihanoukville saw rapid growth from the start, but was quickly, almost abandoned by civilians during the 1970s, when the Khmer Rouge came to power. The port became a military stronghold, first by American-led forces, then by the Khmer Rouge regime. The port was the last place to be evacuated by the US army. After the fall of Pol Pot’s regime, stability returned in 1993
