About this ebook

Meditation is one of the simplest and most effective techniques for creating peace of mind and good health. For centuries, people from a variety of traditions have used meditation as a means of centering themselves, finding balance, and even manifesting their desires through the power of their own thoughts. Although some still view meditation as some sort of lofty practice used by the spiritual elite, more and more people are integrating meditation into their daily lives, and you can too.

Allow yourself to take this journey, for by doing so, you will open yourself up to a life that is less stressful and an existence that is much more abundant. Give yourself the gift of meditation, and start your journey toward a more complete life of knowing yourself and your ability to create the life you want.

    Introduction

Meditation is one of the simplest and most effective techniques for creating peace of mind and good health. For centuries, people from a variety of traditions have used meditation as a means of centering themselves, finding balance, and even manifesting their desires through the power of their own thoughts. Although some still view meditation as some sort of lofty practice used by the spiritual elite, more and more people are integrating meditation into their daily lives, and you can too.

There are a number of ways to meditate, but the purpose behind them all is relatively the same. Meditation helps you take control of your life. By starting with focusing on the breath, people who meditate gain better understanding of their bodies, greater control of their mind, a more peaceful relationship with the world around them, and the power to respond to life in a more joyful way.

Meditation has been used in a variety of spiritual traditions. Although it is often considered to be a Buddhist practice, there is historical evidence that meditation has been used in nearly every major religion on the planet, including Hinduism, Christianity, Taoism, Islam, Judaism, and more. However, one of the great things about meditation is that it requires no religious ideology, and is often used as a way to move beyond the limitations of dogma and doctrine, opening us up directly to the abundance that each religion points to.

The word meditation comes from the Latin word meditari , which means to think, reflect, or ponder. Yet meditation itself isn’t really about thinking. It is about not thinking. It is about quieting the mind so that you will be able to think more clearly.

Clarity of thought is not the only benefit of meditation. However, by gaining control of our thoughts, we can open ourselves up to the greater benefits of better stress management, more vibrant health, more intimate relationships, and more active participation in life. Truly, the benefits of meditation are limitless.

Scientific studies have proven that meditation assists with normalizing blood pressure and decreasing the amount of cortisol, the hormone that most actively produces stress. Meditation also lowers a person's risk for heart attacks, strokes, and overall anxiety. The relaxation that comes with meditation also helps to lower a person’s heart rate, slow down respiration, and improve blood circulation.

Sometimes, meditation is used to go above and beyond these benefits. In some of the more mystical religions, and some of the more intense practices, people have reported reaching altered states of consciousness and having psychic visions. Because meditation affects the portion of the brain related to happiness, prolonged meditation has been known to help people reach a euphoric state similar to the effects of psychotropic drugs. Some have even reported out of body experiences.

Of course, in this day and age, when people are working longer hours than ever before, and stress seems to be coming from every direction, the immediate benefits that meditation brings by helping people to have a greater sense of well being are probably the most important reasons for meditation becoming so popular in recent years. If you’re reading this book, chances are that you have some stress of your own. The good news is that meditation can help you.

Whether you’re a parent on the go, a person with a stressful job, or just trying to figure out how to enjoy life more, taking a few minutes a day to meditate can help you create drastic improvements on how you deal with your stress. If you can do that, it will enable you to respond to the demands of life in a much more positive way.
