    Introduction

Museums, antiques, and historic houses … oh my!

The North Texas edition of Texas Historical Museums lists over 130 historical sites to visit. The compiled list contains points of interest celebrating times past, ranging from museums featuring local history and historic homes to museums honoring a specific subject such as firefighters, railroads, air flight, and more.

Several notable museums in the area are not included, because their interest is of an artistic nature, or the fields of science and nature. Our interest with this guide is for the locations that will take you back in time.

This guide has been compiled from many various sources. Web sites have been confirmed and many were updated for this list, deleting old and obsolete web pages that didn’t exist any longer.

Hours were listed, when available. However, I strongly advise that you call ahead of your visit, to confirm that the hours are still current. It seems that a great many of the locations have hours that vary during our extreme temperatures of Texas summers and winters.

If you find something that is incorrect or needs update, please email me at texastrishafaye@yahoo.com. I will make the corrections on an update version, and get you a copy of the updated guide.

Enjoy your visit back in time!

In 1909, Archer County had outgrown its original jail, a 20 x 20 foot square building. Construction on this larger facility was completed in September 1910. The sandstone structure was designed with living quarters for the Sheriff and his family on the ground floor. The 2nd and 3rd floors contained cells as well as a hanging gallow, which was never used. The first prisoner held in this jail was arrested for stealing a horse. More than 8,000 prisoners were jailed here until the county opened a new facility in 1974. The old jail now houses a museum of old Archer County items.

The Heritage Village has two churches – St. Mary’s Church and the First Christian Church – along with one bungalow, The Bolin House, with more structures planned.

Located just north of downtown Allen in the Allen Heritage Village, St. Mary Church was built in 1887 and has withstood the test of time. The church was organized as an African-American Baptist congregation. It served continually as a house of worship until March 2001 and also served as a school until 1932. Through it all, the church has retained its unique historical character and charm.

The congregation of First Christian Church built this Prairie style structure in 1918 to replace its original rectangular building and brush arbor.

The Bolin House was built about 1920. It is a one-story
